There was a stack of slabs at BBW today, lots of meat, $7.49/lb.

    2. You might try Indus Food Center on San Pablo in Berkeley, a Halal butcher. I think most lamb is $5-$6/lb.

      1. Breast of lamb is available at Verbrugge Meats on College.

        1. I found some at Gene's Fine Foods Market in Pleasanton (of all places). The have a very impressive selection of meat.

I have a philosophical aversion to halal butchers, well really the meat, and I suppose I should have prefaced my original question with this fact. Plus I prefer domestic lamb, it tends to have a natural sweetness not found in the Kiwi or Aussie products normally found at halal butchers (although this might just be in my head as I've never done a blind taste test), also should have been part of my original post.

Thank you again for the replies, this board is a useful resource.

The two halal butchers I patronize source their lamb locally from Dixon CA.

I've never seen imported lamb at a halal butcher. They get fresh whole lambs, sometimes sheep.

That does actually make more sense than them using imported product. I remember a bit ago when I went to Indus for some spices and saw them unloading boxes of meat, some were Aussie lamb and I found it odd, but thinking back now that could have been for the Indus Valley restaurant next door, same family owns both I believe? I also remember reading that because much of the Aussie/Kiwi meat ends up in Southeast Asia and the Middle East it is mostly halal, so perhaps I just started associating the two together.

I do, however, still prefer to buy non-halal meat.

Why would you want to avoid halal meat?

Indus Foods and Indus Village are connected.
