Monterey Park Sam Woo Gone?

A usually reliable informant just called to say that the Monterey Park Sam Woo is now something else. No further details except that it appeared to be bustling with a large number of workers and customers. If somebody can confirm this before my next SGV trip it would be appreciated.

With that closing, does that leave LA without a Sam Woo? That's one thing OC has over LA when it comes to Chinese food I guess.

Sam Woo Irvine is an excellent one to have remaining. The roast duck and everything else I've found superior to the Moneterey Park version anyways.

Last I checked, the Sam Woo at Sepulveda & Victory in Van Nuys is still open, and that's LA (both City and County).

As far as restaurants calling themselves Sam Woo,I think there's still 2 Sam Woos in San Gabriel, one in Alhambra, and one in Cerritos. Also my understanding is that the former Sam Woos in Chinatown and Rowland Heights were just name changes, cf. my previous comments on changing restaurant names in other posts.

I've been remiss... we unwittingly bought Sham Tseng charsiu before they changed the sign last weekend. This weekend They were still giving out Sam Woo takeout menus. We asked the lady at the register where Sam Woo was, and she said "I don't know. He's on a plane."

(pause for laughter)

We went back this weekend and the Grand Opening plants were lining the windows and the sign changeover was official. Last week's Sham Tseng BBQ pork was tasty enough, so we went back again to buy a piece.

For comparison's sake, we bought a hunk o' pork from the Sam Woo in Focus Plaza. By the time we got there, all that was left was the bits. But tasty bits they were... with a deeper flavor, richer color, and better seasoning than Sham Tseng.

However, don't get me wrong. Sam's the man, but Sham'll do in a pinch.

There used to be a Sam Woo in Costa Mesa and one of the local restaurant reviews, possibly from the Orange County Business Journal, did keep referring to Sam the man.

I would also mention the Sam Woo in Las Vegas, except that the last time I did the mods moved the entire thread to the Chains board, presumably because we had crossed state lines. And perish the thought of mentioning Sam Woo in Toronto.

Sham Tseng....named after a place in Hong Kong (New Territories area to be exact) that has historically been very famous for restaurants that specialize in roast goose. People would flock there after hours and feast on geese with beer (amongst other stir fry plates).
