France and Italy - [moved from General Chowhounding board]

Visiting these countries and was wondering how the tiping is handled. Is this added on to the bill?
In France, service is included in the menu price. No tip is required although people will often leave a few coins.
Italy is more flexible. Sometimes service is inlcuded in the menu price (it'll usually say so on the menu), sometimes there's a service charge shown on the bill (and no further tip is required). Sometimes nothing - in which case a traditional tip is usual, although not essential. 10% would be a really good tip for an upscale restauran
