Drinks - Grand Central Terminal

I'm meeting someone for drinks who commutes out of GCT. I remember meeting someone else on another occasion at a bar / restaurant with kind of a Latin theme, I think. The food is a non-issue but what I liked about the place was the reasonable noise-level and relatively spacious seating. In other words, you could actually have a conversation and hear and be heard.

Nothing fits the profile of this place when I look at the GCT website under dining. Does anyone know the name of the restaurant? Does it still exist? My recollection is that it was located in the NW area of the station. While technically maybe it wasn't in the terminal but part of, say, 200 Park Avenue, it definitely seemed to be in the general complex.

I met a friend for an after-work bite recently at Zocalo, on the lower level of GCT (NW quadrant). The food was ok, the margaritas were tasty, service was quick, and even though it's right out there in the terminal the patio seating area didn't feel crowded and conversation was easy.

got a bit turned around in directions - SE quadrant, not NW.

Campbell Apartment, right in the terminal.

I agree -- great place, but not right for this occasion

Was it Zengo on 3rd and 40th? I went there for drinks and that sounds like the place. Cannot attest for the food

I never even knew of this place. Looks interesting, I'll have to check it one day when I'm in the neighborhood.

            YES -- that's it!!

Thank you, kathryn -- I'm not going crazy after all. Great, that's where I'll go for my drinks thing.

Metrazur. Sadly, it just closed on July 1. It was the perfect place to have drinks: you could sit there watching all the activity in the big station hall below, and still have a nice conversation.

Wow, that does sound nice. I never got a chance to try Metrazur. Alas. I wonder what it will be replaced with.

Indeed. I haven't been there in a while and was surprised to hear that it had just closed. The space is excellent, so I'm sure it will get snapped up fast.

The space was excellent but the food quite never lived up to the space. My meals there were always decent but not great.

That's so strange: Metrazur was my go-to place in GCT and then last spring I heard a rumour that it was going to turn into an Apple store.
I asked the staff at the top of the stairs and they said, "No way, we just signed a new lease through 2015 (or some such date)." And now it's gone -too bad; Metrazur was one of the nicest spaces in that complex.

Here is a story about it, referencing the long lease and the Apple store:

Maybe it was Cafe Centro. But I think I've been there and the entrance is more east than my recollection of this other place.

I've met friends at Cafe Centro, and it was fine.

Just met a friend taking the train at Kellari Taverna, which has a nice bar area and is only a few blocks. We had dinner, but the main purpose was to be close to Grand Central and have a comfortable place to catch up.

Windy - thanks for the Cafe Centro feedback. I'll plan on meeting my friend there.

Kellari Taverna sounds good. I'll keep that in mind for a future occasion.
