I would like to try some good xiao long bao, the "pork soup dumplings" that come up here occasionally. I'd prefer not to have to go to some place like Din Tai Fung in Alhambra. If anyone knows of a decent place in Chinatown or downtowb L.A., that would be appreciated thx. Even Burbank?

The xiaolong bao at Mandarin Shanghai Restaurant in Chinatown are good. I never see the restaurant mentioned, but they have fairly decent Shanghai food. Get the Lion's Head Meatballs (shizi tou) and stir-fried rice cakes (nian gao).

I like Dragon Mark, same mall as homestyle and meilong but i've preferred the regular noodle dishes, not the xlb there.

Giang-nan, JZ, Meilong village, heck, try Lake Spring Garden and Merrylin (if they're still open).

I agree, to the extent that Chinatown restaurants are mostly Cantonese -- but Mandarin Shanghai is really truly Shanghainese. We live in SGV and used to drive out with Shanghainese-speaking relatives for a change for our usual SGV haunts.
