Anything new or interesting on Smith, Court, Henry, or Columbia Street?

My husband's birthday is coming up next week and we'd really like to get back to our old hood for dinner. --Would love to hear suggestions on anything new and exciting. Cuisine type doesn't really matter nor does price point... Just new and exceptional. We've tried Seersucker and LOVED it. I'm from TN originally and it's some of the best, freshest Southern food. That one is a "maybe", but other suggestions?

Thanks so much!

  1. not really "nice dinner" worthy, but in the southern vein ive really liked Van Horn Sandwich shop's work - the fried chicken sandwich is great, the sweet potato, lettuce and tomato, while somewhat heretical (a veggie version of a blt is no blt to me!) is also very tasty if meat eating isnt your thing. its a somewhat spare space but pretty nice for a sandwich shop, and they have a good beer selection and lovely backyard/garden/patio.

i think of it more as a nicer lunch option or casual dinner (or take-out, really) but its worth checking out, if not for his birthday proper than maybe a birthday-related trip to the old 'hood.

thanks for posting this question, though, ive been away from bk for a month and you helped remind me i really want one of those fried chicken sandwiches when i get home this week.

    1. we really like brucie (court, italian-ish), van horn sandwich shop (court, just sandwiches though), and strong place (court also). haven't had a bad meal at any of them and brucie just opened a back garden also.

      1. On par with Seersucker in both quality and price (and almost in style/decor though maybe it's a point or two lower there), my wife and I LOVE Sue Perette on Smith Street. GREAT steak, GREAT lentil salad, GREAT... well, almost everything we've had. We don't understand why this place isn't busier.
