Steakhouse near University for Birthday Dinner
I am looking for a place, preferably not a chain (Ruth Chris), for a nice steak (good, prime meat) dinner on my birthday. Will be at a meeting at the University - am an out-of-towner but will have a car. I have looked at both Murray's and Manny's and right now I am leaning towards Murray's. Would love suggestions/thoughts from locals. Thanks!

Manny's is gorgeous and the hotel's bar next door is really fun for cocktails either before or after dinner.

I realize you said not a chain, but Capital Grille gets my money in the Twin Cities when going out for steak. IMO, they have hands down the best steak in MSP. And for what it's worth, if a chain does it better than an independent, there's nothing wrong with going with chain. But others may disagree. As for location, nothing is really too far from the U. There are no decent steak options near the U. Construction not withstanding, all your good options - Manny's, Murray's, Capital Grille, and others, are all in the same driving range.
