brunch questions

  • 2

A friend and I are coming to the city to see a show first Saturday in August and want to do brunch beforehand.

I've done extensive searching on this board, have looked over dozens of websites and menus and came up with the following as possible brunch places.

Locanda Verde
Perilla
Prune
Spotted Pig
Little Owl

As to why I picked those places, I really don't know. I just get more and more confused as there are just a few restaurants in NYC. Checking out the menus they all have a few things on them that I'd order. Looking at reviews I see alot of good ones on the above, some negatives too.

We don't care so much about where in the city it is located as we are willing to grab a cab. We both love really good and interesting food. A restaurant with a good vibe, friendly staff is also a plus. If you can make a reservation that is a plus. But if they open early enough we'll just arrive early to give us time.

Any of the above places you'd pick over the other? Any other places not on the list you'd suggest.

Any help or guidance you can give us would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

  1. Foodwise I would say that Little Owl and Perilla's brunch food is not as good as the others, but only by a little. Also both of them have rather small / limited menus in comparison.

Of Locanda, Spotted Pig, and Prune, if you are concerned about making a reservation, then Locanda Verde is the clear winner since SP and Prune don't take them.

For interesting food, Prune is probably more different/interesting than the others and if you show up at 9:30am for the 10am opening you should be fine (did this a few weeks ago w/ a friend).

IMO my top two brunch places right now are Minetta Tavern and Locanda Verde, but I haven't been back to the Breslin or Maialino for brunch for a little while.
