Santana's Mexican

The place just opened this past weekend and it's confirmed that it is the same operators as Popocatepetl on Belanger, I believe the menu is identical. I was there over the weekend, the homemade beef empanadas were great, I would pass on the chicken ones next time. The chorizo sopes were very good too although I wasn't crazy with the fact that the tortilla was deep fried and crunchy, I guess it was done to hold together the ingredients. A+ for the chicken enchiladas as well with tomatillo sauce.

Finally some Mexican in the WI and good Mexican to top it off.

They need to do something about cooling the place down though. That AC unit is not doing anything.

What did you have fredmir? I want to try some of their grilled meats next time, they held on to and are using the charcoal pit that Spicy Island used for their jerk chicken for.

My mother had chicken empanadas, very good and I had the one below the empanadas on the menu, chicken as well, Don`t remember the name

Sorry it was the chicken enchiladas my mother had and I had a dish very much like the chicken enchiladas, can`think of the name now

      2. Have they expanded the place in any way? I know Spicy Island was more of a take-out/delivery joint. They had a few tables, but not much room for more than five or six.

Yes, they have extended the place and have more tables in the section where Spicy Island was walled off.

Yup their chicken enchiladas are up there.

        2. I was there on Saturday and I'm sorry to say that the food was not at all to my liking. I tried three different items and disliked each. I found everything bland, and I suspect cans and jars were used instead of making stuff from scratch (beans, tomatillo sauce, etc.).
Whatever the cause of the lack of flavour (& in the case of the beef, it was way too salty), for us it was inedible. We ate the nachos plate because we were hungry but it was nothing special, very plain and bland. When our other dishes arrived, we had a bite from each dish and left the rest of the food. Needless to say we won't be going back and I will not recommend this place to friends.

          1. We finally got around to trying this. It was good, but not great. I'm very happy that there mexican now in West Island and I'll probably go back if i'm craving just because of close proximity, but if this was downtown I wouldn't go out of my way to eat it. Our chips and salsa was just OK, the salsa tasted like it came out of a jar, but the chips were good and fresh. Guacamole was sadly not good at all, too creamy, no texture at all, and way too much lime juice in my opinion. I had the chicken enchiladas in green chile sauce which were very very good. I was all set to write this place off, but this dish was great. Husband had some sort of grilled chorizo steak, can't remember the name, but he said it was tasty, perfectly charred, and the salad on the side was simple and fresh. Wanted to try to creamy carrot soup, but they were out. Had the tortilla soup instead which was again, just OK, it needed more salt and other flavor in my opinion, but it came with the meal so I can't complain.
Weather was perfect when we went so they had the door open and both AC and a couple fans going and it was very comfortable, but I can see what previous reviewer was talking about as far as the AC not doing much if it were a hot day. Our server was very nice and helpful, so they get bonus points from me for that as well.
