Vacation in Mystic, on to Block Island, looking for recommendations

We are heading to Mystic (driving from PA, up 95) for a few days then on to Block Island.

I am looking for casual (we aren't taking dressier clothing) for lunch and dinner spots in the Mystic area as well as lunch spot prior to catching the Block Island ferry.

We will be in Mystic over a weekend. Breakfast is include at our accomodations so I am looking for some lunch and dinner ideas. We are staying in town and ideally we would like to walk.

After Mystic, we are travelling to Block Island. Our plan is to leave Mystic late morning and would like to have lunch prior to catching a mid-afternoon ferry.

We like seafood and would like to eat outside if the weather cooperates. We like all sorts of seafood. Anything on the water would be lovely.

Ideas?

  1. Have you tried searching Mystic on this board? There are many recent threads.
Sounds like a nice vacation for landlocked folks. Enjoy!

The recent threads that I found via searching addressed pizza and pitas. I am not interested in either.

I just ate at AZUs on mainstreet Mystic and it was very good. I rec' it. I passed Bravo Bravo when I was leaving and it looked awesome and I've heard incredible things about it ( Connecticut Magazine and a PBS show). I liked AZus though. Really diverse menu and a tad pricey ( but I don't eat in places like that much).

Look up AZUs menu on line. There's a couple of spots in Mystic but in Block Island it's much more hit or miss...

My family and I recently went to Ballards beach in Block Island ( nice beach and can get drinks served to you) but due to a member not feeling good we ended up eating at Ballard's restaurant which is a huge no-no to people on this board and rightly so. Very pricey and subpar food. It was right on the beach though. The last 3 times we ate at Block Island we ate at different places and had solid experiences. We ate at the National Hotel ( I think - it's the big hotel that has great views of the ocean and ferry from the outside dining). That was good food. We also ate at Finns which people rec' but my wife and I weren't impressed, but maybe I didn't order the right thing. Standard fare. We liked a slightly off the beaten path sandwich place called Sisters ( ?) or something or other and the sandwiches were good. You eat on picnic benches in their yard. Funky and likable. We were lucky it wasn't crowded because I've heard it's a major stop.

Hope this helps and sorry if I'm off on any restaurant names - it's off the top of my head. Mystic has some solid places to eat in Azus, Bravo Bravo and a few others. I used to like Anthony J's but my last 2 meals there weren't that good.

Also take the water taxi tour of the Mystic river. Really nice time.

And we usually get ice cream from the Drawbridge Ice Cream place but it's kind of expensive. I also like the S&Js Oyster Restaurant right off the bridge with outdoor dining. Usually good food and nice views. That one gets crowded however.

Thanks for the ideas. I will look into both as well as the water taxi.

We used to go to Block Island several times a year for 5+ years and I never tried Ballard's. Sounds like I didn't miss anything. Not familar with Sister's, will check that out.

I cant think of anything outstanding in Mystic. in years past I have always had good meals at abbots in Noank. Or The seahorse in Groton.

On Block Island I would recommend The Narragansett Inn for dinner, recently dined there with their new chef and ownership and was pleasantly surprised.

Also the same for Dead Eye Dicks, both have my favorite dinning view from the island and I also think both are excellent picks.

Lunch I would do the beachhead or the Oar, both BI institutions.

Past years I have enjoyed the Manases and Elis however I haven’t had the pleasure to have dinner there this season, so I cannot make a whole hearted recommendation.

For desert the ice cream place in town was really excellent a few weeks ago.

I found Abbott's in another thread and I think we will definately try it.

We are staying at the Manases and will eat there and report.

Good choices, please do. Also if you have time an island tour from migs rig is always a great bet. Ask for Jim he gives a knowledgeble tour, both food and non food related. migs rig 401-480-0493

    2. S & P Oyster is good, the have outdoor seating as well, somewhat expensive, but good. Bravo Bravo as others have said. Mystic Pizza always a staple. Mystic Soup for great paninis but very limited seating, you can just get take out and find a nice place to eat outside. Very good but check their website for hours, lunch only??? They are hard to find but worth it, they are located right behind an eatery called Sea Swirl in a brick building also housing a tire/auto parts store.

just a short drive down the road in Westbrook is Lenny & Joe's, my favorite lobster roll in that area. I think there is one in Madison as well.
