re: russkar
i was almost gonna recommend checking that place out, but i've never actually had it so couldnt vouch. also known for their oxtail soup, but i understand its frozen for takeout as its more a convenience mart....but owned by folks that run the flamingo restaurant in pearl city....interesting, thanks for the nod, russkar

Monarch Seafood is supposed to have a really good Banana Cream Pie, but I've never had it so I can't personally vouch for it. I also know some people really like the one at Anna Millers, others not so much. I always end up getting the strawberry pie there, so can't comment on the banana cream first hand there either.

re: barbecue
thanks barbecue. its been a long time since i had a kapiolani bakery pie (obviously), but i do remember that it was an exceptionally good crust. the crusts at ana miller's are good, but probably won't equal your memory of kapiolani, but then what chance does reality ever have against memories.

I miss that bakery too! Also used to go to their Coffee Shop on S. King Street (now Golden Duck) for breakfast and lunch, great diner style food. I remember their cheeseburger was voted best in Honolulu at one time (was it Honolulu Magazine?). They had a take-out window there with $.25 hot dogs, used to see guys order 4 or 5 for lunch with a drink.
As for banana cream pie, I kind of like Ani's Bakery version which I buy at Costco. Pretty decent, but I'd be interested to hear about any others around town.
