I need New York Style coffee cake!

Hello all and thanks for reading this. I grew up in NYC and currently live in East Greenville, which isn't too far from Quakertown. My husband works in King of Prussia so that area works for me as well. I am pregnant and dying for NY style coffee cake, the kind with super big chunks of crumbs in a layer just as thick as the cake it rests on - does anyone know where I can find some? I'd hate to have to order online. Thanks in advance for your replies!

  1. Taste of Italy in Springhouse has a guy who delivers baked goods from Brooklyn every day. I would suggest you call them and see if they have what you want or can help you out.

    1. Might be too far for you, but if you get desperate try Frangelli's on 9th and Ritner in South Philly. I have no idea how it compares to "New York Style" but their coffee cake has lots of crumb on top.

Thanks I am going to check both of these out. I really appreciate it!

      2. There are some locally owned groceries with their own bakeries who make a coffee cake which fits your basic description Of course they would never be called New York Style and perhaps, in fact, do not meet that standard. Den's suggestion is an excellent place to look as they do make NYC runs daily for bagels, baked good, bread and other NYC style items.

What constitutes a New York coffee cake Becca?

New York style has an extra thick layer of crumb topping, usually with large moist crumbs like this:

I have to say that that picture looks almost exactly like what Frangelli's has.

Looks like I'm definitely goingbto make way to Frangellis!! I'll be in the city for a concert this weekend so I'll check them out. I'm sure I'll find more than the crumb cake - they sound amazing from what I've read on the web.

        2. I come from NY and live in Florida. I have a recipe that I got from Martha Stewart a few years ago and it's spot on if you'd like to make your own. Happy to post it if you want it.
