Bar-Room: wow!

Day one started flat with a 'meh' breakfast at Petrossian (http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/794715), but took a decided turn for the better with lunch at the Bar-Room at the Modern.

It's a spare modern look (no surprise) with a fabulous menu that highlights distinctly French quirks.

Sweetie started with the fresh grilled shrimp w/ cabbage & gruyere salad; I had the Alsatian tart flambee (Alsatian thin crust tart with crème fraîche, onion and applewood-smoked bacon). Both were superb. The tart was a bit on the salty side, but my Fisher amber ale (France) paired beautifully.

Our seconds were the grilled diver scallops (with baby carrots, spring peas and rhubarb broth) for him, and the Warm Lamb and Goat Cheese Terrine with toasted pistachios for me. Another excellent course. The lamb was superb, not at all gamy, and perfectly highlighted by the tangy goat cheese and crunch pistachios. Sweetie has had a lot of scallops in a lot of places, and said these might just be the best he's ever had.

Third course was the Pan-Seared Skate with crispy rock shrimp, creamy grits and brown butter vinaigrette for me and the House Made Alsatian Country Sausage with sauerkraut and whole-grain mustard sauce for him. Another winner. Perfectly pan-fried skate; flavorful and delicious sausage. We were both very happy.

Too full for dessert. Meal plus two beers, two cream sodas, and before tip: $154. Not at all outrageous given the quality (I've paid more for worse) and quantity. (We'll be eating light for dinner tonight.

)

Highly recommended.

    So glad you enjoyed your lunch in the Bar Room at The Modern. One can never go wrong eating there as the food is always superb.

    We had another wow of a lunch there on July 4th. Among the dishes the four of us chose were two you had: the grilled diver scallops and the house made country sausage with sauerkraut. We also ordered the Alsatian Buckwheat Späetzle with Yellowfin Tuna paillard Crudo, Roasted Foie Gras, Pine Nuts and Black Pepper Gastrique for the table, and it totally blew us away. Too bad you didn't have room for dessert. The four we each selected were, as usual, terrific.

      Wait, I see in your Flickr set that the dish formerly known as "egg in a jar" is no longer in a jar! Can this be true?!

        Correct, kathryn! Same combination of ingredients but now plated. I've never had it because it doesn't appeal to me, but our son-in-law had it for the first time and loved it!
