LOCKED DISCUSSION

We will be going to CA later this month. Please offer recommendations in the following areas:
Ojai, Laguna Beach, and LaJolla. Restaurants can be in surrounding areas since we have a car.
Looking for the following:
- Casual, but great
- Local cuisine
- Cannot miss places
- Great fish/seafood

Restaurants can be for lunch or dinner and can be reasonable to upscale. Just good fresh food.

Thanks

Denise

    Denise, post your Laguna questions on the LA board and LaJolla on the San Diego board. You'll get some good responses there. Ojai is appropriate here. We have some Santa Barbara people who can help.

      As long as it is strawberry season, they serve old fashion short-cake at Boccali's in Ojai - definitely a local, casual sort of place. Regular food if you choose carefully is good too - it is "Italian" but their ravioli were good and there is always pizza. Setting is both indoors and outdoors but the draw this time of the year is their short-cake - real short-cake pastry with sugary crunch top and strawberries and whipped cream - served hot and juicy - the basics.

      Over the hill from Ojai is Santa Paula which has some unusual small town restaurants worth a trip like Hozy's (http://www.hozysgrill.com/) and even the restauranat at the Santa Paula airport - gets voted as one of the better fly-in airport restaurant's for private pilots. Very funky small town feeling in Santa Paula in the heart of the Citrus Capitol of the World (really!) You will forget you are in Southern California -- and that is a good thing sometimes - it is like the clock got turned way, way back to the way it was 100 years ago when it was all orchards and small industrious towns with real centers and individual character. That is Santa Paula. They even used it for a movie set because it felt so "small town" (Georgia Rules - perfectly awful movie with Jane Fonda and Lindsey Lohan, but the town was cute

      )

      And Main Street in Old Towne Ventura has some interesting small chef owned places, as well as Mai's for very tasty Hawaiian - Vietnamese Tiki Bar funky also at 1967 East Main street, but a few miles east (heading away from the ocean) down the road and not in their restored "Old Towne" which is near the San Buenaventura mission where the other collection of small restaurants are.

        Thank you, sounds like some great recommendations and good info on the area. Will definitely check out the Santa Paula airport restaurant, since my husband wants to rent a plane and fly while there.
