Firme Farms?

I received an offer for their CSA veggie box on my doorstep. They promise a $25 box for $10 every week. How is their produce? As good a deal as it seems, I'm thinking that unless I do a lot of cooking, I will end up with a lot of rotting produce.

  1. If it's the same Firme that used to be at the Berkeley farmers markets, he's great. I haven't had carrots, corn, or Romano beans that good since, and he was the only farmer who blanched his leeks in the French style.

Wow, he's at East Bay farmers markets three days a week. Awesome.

Great! The Oakland Saturday and Sunday locations are convenient for me and I hadn't heard of Phat Beets http://www.phatbeetsproduce.org/ or the East Bay Church Vendor's Village: 10:00 am - 2:00 pm Sundays (Telegraph & 41st, Oakland) before.

I'm thinking they are one and the same. They left a leaflet at my West Berkeley doorstep. Pickup is on 1000 block of Hearst. I think I will give them a try.

Was their corn of the non supersweet variety?

I think he grew an su hybrid rather than se or sh2. It had more corn flavor than other farms'.

      2. Phat Beets is a teeny little market, this was their second week. Firme's stand had carrots, Romano beans, cranberry beans, green beans, lots of other nice stuff. There was also a nice plant stand. It's on 57th just west of Market, in the parking lot of a doctors office, very close to Tamales Unicos de Cuernavaca. 10-2 Saturdays.

His corn's still the best. Today (Sunday) he has stands in:

          Livermore: 9:00 am - 1:00 pm (2nd St at J St)
North Beach, S.F.: 9:00 am - 1:30 pm (Mason St. & Columbus Ave)
          East Bay Church Vendor's Village: 10:00 am - 2:00 pm (Telegraph & 41st, Oakland)

            His squashes are great, too.

It is definitely the best corn I've tasted in California. I couldn't help but pick up twice as much as I needed after tasting it at the Vendor's Village. It is sweet, yet flavorful.

          2. Want! Is there a website on there where the rest of us can sign up for the CSA veggie box?

Nothing on their Web site. You could email them and ask: veggies@firmefarms.com

I asked them about the CSA. They said it was West Berkeley only.

                  Thank you both!

I just found out about Phat Beets' produce box (the Beet Box, of course)... apparently it started last winter and Firme Farms is one of the participating farms! It's $24 a week and $2 of that goes to the clinic that their farmers' market is in front of (behind? whatever) to give to clients who have diet-related problems so that they can get some free organic produce. I'm stoked!

Yes, I live in W Berkeley. I figured if they wanted to open wider, they would publicize it.

              2. I went to the Firme booth at the San Leandro farmers market last night. Richard Firme's sister was staffing the booth, she said he's very ill.

They had the best ripe red bell peppers I've seen this year and some ripe-smelling orange honeydews, bought one but haven't tried it yet. No leeks, carrots, or Romano beans.

They're also at the Fillmore market in SF on Saturdays.

Yes, they aren't doing the West Berkeley boxes this season due to Richard's illness. I wonder what's wrong with him and send good thoughts for his recovery.

If you Google Richard Firme there's some information.

                2. I saw Richard Firme at his stand at the San Leandro farmers' market last night. He said he has more land so will be growing a wider variety of stuff.
