Sweet Potato Bistro - New Taiwanese in Newton, opening on Monday

lipoff Jul 7, 2011 01:58 PM

Just wanted to let everyone know that the new Taiwanese restaurant in Newton Four Corners, Sweet Potato Bistro, is set to open on Monday (July 11th). This is the location previously occupied by Peking Cuisine, or if you remember way back, by Mandarin Yen.

Their menu seems to include some specifically Taiwanese snacks, such as oyster pancakes and ba-wan. The weekend dim sum menu (http://sweetpotatobistro.com/weekend-...) looks particularly interesting.

Typical blech asian american menu on weekdays....like Chung Shing Yuan which has awesome taiwanese dim sum on weekends but horrible sweet gloppy stuff on weekdays and evening dinners aren't great either :-P

If someone tries this place on weekdays or dinners, I'd like to know if they're any good. The weekend dim sum menu looks good though :-)

Actually their specials look pretty good. :p

The menu isn't totally hideous - at least no general gao in sight. If they execute some of the typical Americanized food well, then it's not a bad option to supplement hopefully the more interesting Taiwanese and Chinese dishes. What really throws me off is the addition of a few Thai dishes. Restaurant seems to have a split personality disorder, without being explicitly pan-Asian.

general gao's chicken is the first choice in the lunch specials section (oddly it doesn't appear under the poultry section)

Not only do those specials look good, according to the "testimonial" they sound great too!

Testimonials before they even opened. I am truly impressed.

The schizo tag should have been obvious by the name "Sweet Potato Bistro".... sounds like a French vegetarian restaurant!

the "everyday tapas" and the weekend brunch seem to be the highlight of the menu

Taiwanese Tapas has such a better ring to it than Dim Sum...
Hey, I have to give them credit - it appears they have put some serious thought into their customer base.

I think next we need a Spanish dim sum place...to cross-market tapas to the Chinese population

Cafe Atlantico down in DC used to do exactly that --- Nuevo Latino Dim Sum:
