Ocean City - what are the must-eats?

krystle920 Jul 7, 2011 01:54 PM

We are going down to Ocean City from NY/CT this weekend and I just wanted to get the Chowhound take on the must-eats in the area. We are a couple in our late 20s staying at Ocean Breeze Hotel near the boardwalk. Open to any type of food.

Here is the list I have so far:

Meals:
-Hula Grill
-Pure Tacos
-Smitty's Clam Bar - byob, right? still weird that Ocean City is a dry town.

Snacks:
-Johnson's Popcorn
-Curly Fries
-All Natural Pizza
-Is Mack & Manco worth a try or overrated? What about White House Sub Shop in Atlantic City?

Ice Cream:
-A La Mode Ice Cream
-George's Ice Cream
-People seem to like Betty's and Hobby Horse but it seems their ice cream is just Hershey's and Breyers.

Thanks!

A La Mode Ice Cream is very very good, I definitely recommend that one if you're big into ice cream. Mack & Manco is good, but nothing out of this world as far as I'm concerned. That being said, everyone I know goes bonkers for it, so I suggest giving it a shot for sure. Expect a large line. The Anchorage in Somers Point is great for seafood but a bit pricey; same goes for the Crab Trap, but you'll get a lot of food at the Crab Trap, and it is very good. Charlie's is a good dive in Somers Point for wings but I haven't tried anything else there. Uncle Bill's is good for breakfast, but way overpriced. I can't think of any must try dinner places in OC to be honest, Somers Point really has better options.

Smitty's is actually in Somers Point, NOT Ocean City. Not sure they serve alcohol though. Yes OC is a dry town, but there are liquor stores right over the bridge on the way from the GSP to OC. You can drink in your hotel, just not in public.

We enjoy Mack & Manco - we 'll hit the boardwalk in mid winter just for a slice, but now they have an off-shore location (Somers Point). They put the cheese and then the sauce on the dough - backwards as some might say, but thin crust and very yummy.

Kohr Brother's custard is another favorite. It lost some allure when our local mall got a franchise for it. The custard is really creamy and comes in some good flavor combos.

We complete our Boardwalk Trifecta with Steel's Fudge. Creamy, fresh, never pre-packaged and always delicious.

Craig Laban reviewed the Bongo Cafe and Grille OC in the Phila. Inquirer Sun.7/3/11. You might want to check that out. Plenty of BYOB's just south in Sea Isle City. OC is dry meaning DRY.

Ocean City = dry town = No BYOB
