Nice place near Broadway and 77th
Looking for a romantic restaurant for my girlfriend's birthday. We are staying on the west side near Broadway and 77th. Would like something in the neighborhood. Trying to keep it under $50 a plate but could deal with something a tad more expensive. The genre of the food is not really important but she is a photographer so has a thing about good lighting. Thats a must! I'm happy wth a decent wine list. Thanks or your help!
We had a lovely dinner recently at Nice Matin (79th and Amsterdam). The food was excellent, and their wine list is aMAZing (and well priced). It would fit nicely into your budget.

I've often found Nice Matin too noisy to be thought of as romantic. Telepan would definitely fit the bill, but the $59 four-course prix fixe menu would come in a bit high for your budget. Another largely under-the-radar possibility is Spiga, a lovely Italian restaurant on 84th between Amsterdam & Broadway (AmEx only).

Telepan and Nice Matin are great choices. I'd also recommend Salumeria Rosi. Maybe Fish Tag, though I haven't been there since the chef left.

Agree with most all already posted (I'm in the minority on Telepan), but would suggest that you look into Ouest--if you order a la carte, you may be able to slip in under your budget, but the prix fixe menus are a steal. The circular booths are very cool. www.ouestny.com Please report back on what you decide to do and how it all works out.

I also like the circular booths at Ouest. They used to participate on restaurant.com gift certificates, not sure if they still do? Food is more than decent, and I remember liking their desserts quite a bit (their pastry chef is/was someone pretty well-known, IRRC.)

When you say $50/plate do you mean before tax/tip? What about drinks.
Ouest is nice thogh I have found the decor a little worn the last time I was there. I'd add 'cesca to the list at the price point. A bit cheaper but definitely nice decor and food that is pretty good is Tolani, a wine focused restaurant at Amsterdam and 80th, just 3 blocks from your hotel (The Avenue I guess)
