George Lang

Those of you in Manhattan should foregather at the old Cafe des Artiste (CDA) to raise a glass in memory. I'll be doing it down south coming closing time today. Who can forget that great story about the man trying to barge into a packed CDA and threatening to have the "maitre d'hotel" fired? "I'm a personal friend of George Lang!" he bellowed at....George Lang.

I'm saddened to hear of his passing. I really enjoyed his book "Nobody Knows the Truffles I've Seen".

Oddly, I thought of him yesteday while reading a (1993) book on kitchen design; his Manhattan kitchen was one of the ones featured.

It sure leaves a great, big, gaping hole for those who love to laugh and eat . Some folks found him too brash but I liked him. Can't claim to have known him although we spoke several times at CDA and shared some laughs...had a mutual friend so that was my intro.

There is precious little laughter in the world and GL was one of our allies in mirth.
