What's my best bet at China House?

TorontoJo Jul 7, 2011 05:13 AM

Catching up with some old friends over dinner at China House (their pick). What are my safest options to order? I'm hoping that as long as I go there with expectations of old school Canadian Chinese style food, I won't be too disappointed. Any recs?

Hope you're going soon. The last day of eat in at teh restaurant is July 18! A condo is going to be built on the property, but in the meantime for a while they are going to keep a take-out going until they find another location.

You're right -- it's Old School Canadian Chinese Food. Their long BBQ ribs are the best. The chicken chow mein is great. Their kung pao shrimp are delicious. Their house plum sauce is great. Good honey ribs. Enjoy!

In case you or anyone is interested about its closing:

Oh, and I always loved their made-from-scratch chicken balls and ribs. Haven't been in like 4 years though....

Saw that in the Globe today - kind of sad but I ordered takeout from there last summer and it was truly terrible. And EXPENSIVE! Such a sad decline of an old favourite - we used to get takeout from there in the 70s back when I was a picky kid and all I'd eat were fried wontons!

That's funny, fried wontons were all I'd eat when I was a kid too (But from Elizabeth Chinese Food, our now closed go-to).

Closing?!!? I have to get out there for one last meal, bad or not.

I used to always get the chicken soo gai there. I enjoyed it.

OK, back from dinner. The sticky BBQ ribs were the best part about dinner. The rest (cashew chicken, beef with ginger and scallions and some noodle dish with chicken, shrimp and BBQ pork) was just barely ok. Even with my expectations set appropriately, I left pretty unsatisfied. I should have just had more ribs and some steamed rice.

Yeah go for the kitschy decor and to check out the giant lacquered hairdos on some of the older guests. Their ribs are the best thing they do.

CHouse was pretty good if you like retro Canadian Chinese until two years ago when the new owner (non-Chinese) fired the staff and is now turning the site into a condo.
