Coupons and Deals

Some people like posts about restaurant deals, and other people loathe them. We're trying a new approach that will hopefully help people on both sides by making deal posts easier to find and easier to ignore.

This thread is now the place to mention local restaurant deals and coupons from sites like Groupon, Living Social, etc. We'll sticky it temporarily until people who post deals are aware it's there, and then allow it to float freely.

A couple of guidelines to keep in mind:

- You may not post deals with a referral link so that you get bonuses or payments for referring people. We know that sometimes that happens by accident, since it's not always clear that you're getting a referral link. We suggest logging out of the deal site and visiting the deal page to get a clean link. Normally, we make it a policy not to edit the content of user's posts without permission, however, in the case of deal threads, by posting, you're giving us permission to edit your link if it contains referral information. We will not edit any other text.

- Our usual insider rules apply ( http://www.chowhound.com/topics/36760... ), so if you're associated with either the deal site or the restaurant, you may not post.

- Please don't post every deal indiscriminately. This is Chowhound, not Cheaphound -- pick deals that you think your fellow hounds will be genuinely interested in, because they're from restaurants worth visiting. And feel free to comment on your experiences with the restaurant or recommend dishes -- more chow tips will make the threads more helpful. And others should feel free to reply and discuss. If we end up with a good sub-thread with more than a few posts going about a specific restaurant, please just use 'report' to flag it, and the mods can split it out to its own thread.

- Restaurants and food-specific businesses only, please, no deals for gyms, spas, etc.

Unfortunately, we can't merge threads, so if people post deals outside of the deal threads, we can't move them to the thread. Please use 'report' to flag them for us, and we'll touch base with the poster to have it reposted.

If you have any questions or comments about these new threads, please jump over to the Site Talk thread: http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/7941...

Sorry. Didn't notice the December date on your posting. Duh!

          1. re: sandiegomike

The date stamps are not what you call conspicuous with this particular web design - it is why you often see people respond to 5-year old threads. :)

        2. re: sandiegomike

I think "Daily Deal" is fairly explanatory. Check the dates on the posts in this thread to be sure they haven't expired.

HILLCREST— The local food community recently lost Joel Mendenhall, one of the ranchers behind Homegrown Meats. To honor his passing, Whole Foods Market Hillcrest is hosting a barbecue this Saturday, October 5 and serving Homegrown's grass-fed beef burger plates for $5; all proceeds go to a scholarship fund set up to support his family, to be matched by the market.

I think that is at least a hint that their remodel (and dumping down of the menu) might not work as well as they thought

                                                    1. re: honkman

Couldn't agree more about the remodel. If you sit down for dinner before 7PM you've got a harsh sun pounding into most of the dining room. It is a small space with no tables that are even semi-private; has the ambience of a Denny's. On the other hand, I do like the new menu; don't really understand the "dumbing down" assessment.

                                                      1. re: mcgrath

We found the new dishes/menu overall much less complex and flavorful than his previous creations. There too many "standard" dishes now on the menu yiu see on many other menus whereas before he often had more unique approaches. We really liked his old Chef's Mercy Menu approach but the new one was just OK but also a bit boring and it is in the moment out of our regular restaurant rotation

                                                    2. re: Beach Chick

Used it today, and was impressed. Had the fried avocado. Loved the chile crust, the pesto sauce and the frisee salad. Mel had the artichoke salad, also very solid.

My ribeye was very good, and Mel's monkfish was very good too.

We share a stone fruit cobbler, very good, but we were ready for an Underberg by that time.
Great deal. Jason provided excellent service. Will go back, no doubt.

                                                    3. The Hake La Jolla for weekend brunch for two $29 with 2 cocktails. .

That's kinda sad. Haven't been for quite some time, might have to take advantage of it.

                                                            1. re: Stiflers_Mom

That is depressing. I also haven't been there in probably 2 years because getting a table was kind of a pain on the weekends. I heard they have reservations now but can't confirm.

                                                              1. re: MrKrispy

They have reservation (opentable) for years now. It is still quite crowded on Friday and Saturday night but went recently during the week at around 9pm and it was surprisingly few customers

                                                                1. re: MrKrispy

Depressing? Sad? Do you get bummed out when Whole Foods puts something on sale? Restaurants stay in business for years running the Groupon business model during shoulder seasons and slower times. Reap the benefit.

                                                                  1. re: Stiflers_Mom

I hope you are right but I doubt that there is data to back this up. We buy most years the "Entertainment" coupon book and there is quite a good correlation between new restaurants in the book and that they go out of business within the next year.

                                                                    1. re: honkman

I filtered my inbox for Starlite; They offered similar discounts in 03/12, 10/12, 10/13 and now, 08/14.

I think Crab Catcher runs a "daily deal" on a quarterly basis and sells a ton of em. Barrio Star has been running them for years (fall and spring). I'm pretty sure Romesco has run 2-3 of em in the last year. Sessions Public runs a couple a year. I've seen Grant Grill (recently and on this thread) a few times. Herringbone, DZ Akins, Salt & Cleaver, Mission Brewery, etc. etc.

                                                                      1. re: Stiflers_Mom

Good to know, I usually consider the use of groupon-type things for established restaurants as a death knell. I am going to try and get in there soon.

                                                                        1. re: Stiflers_Mom

While I confident you're factually correct, it's pretty clear many of us have the *perception* that Groupon and it's ilk reduces the percieved value of the establishment.

Maybe it shouldn't be that way.

                                                                          But it is.

                                                                    2. re: MrKrispy

The swordifsh poisson du jour was excellent; same for hanger steak, White gazpacho, heirloom tomato & burrata, and shrimp summer rolls from Tapas Tuesday menu also very good. Starlite mule and kentucky colonel, thumbs up. Wish there was a place like this in South Bay....
