Beer Pairing Dinner for Birthday

It's my fiance's birthday on Sat, July 23rd, and I'm looking for a place either in Manhattan or Brooklyn that is serving a beer pairing dinner. I know restaurants usually have this every now and then, but it seems really difficult to find a beer pairing event if you're focused on a specific date. I'm also open to other similar ideas like if there's some sort of guy-ish type dinner event that day.

Another option is to go to a restaurant that would have a good selection of beers and relatively gourmet food and create a pairing ourselves. Maybe something like Freemans, Vinegar Hill House, Char No 4, etc. Basically not stuffy but still relatively nice atmosphere.

  1. Two places that have impressed me recently with their beer selection are Vandaag and Jimmy's 43. Neither is stuffy - Vandaag is hip in a low-key way, and Jimmy's is a below-street-level pub. I didn't eat at Jimmy's, since most of the food has bacon all over it (which I don't eat), and I found the food at Vandaag interesting but not exactly good (plenty of other people like it, though). You'll have to do your own pairings at both, I think.

I second Jimmy's as I know they do that there. I haven't been to Vandaag but I can say Jimmy's def is a guyish type of dinner place. I myself enjoyed in never the less. Food was good and their assortment of beers is great. If your finance is into beer try getting him Brooklyn Brewery newest Beer Masters series beer called The Concoction, I just tried it and it's fabulous!!! If you want to go for a beer before Jimmy's stop by DBA its in the area and have very nice selection.

        1. Depends how fancy you want to go... most Danny Meyer and Tom Colicchio restaurants have excellent beer lists, so if you want to go all-out you could do Gramercy Tavern, Colicchio & Sons, or even Eleven Madison Park. Any would would be happy to set up beer pairings for you, especially with advance notice they could recommend specific dishes for specific beers. At either of the former you'd be fine in t-shirts & jeans.

Jimmy's 43 is a great choice for something more casual. They do special "guided" beer pairing dinners, three or five courses, though there's a 10 person minimum for those. But if you've got 10 people, it could be fun. Otherwise, they have a great beer list and they'd be happy to suggest pairings for things off the regular menu.

Vandaag was a good choice as well - I'm one of those who likes it quite a lot. I've never seen them do specific beer pairing dinners, but I'm sure they could put something together for you. And the beer list is very interesting.

          Eleven Madison Park

          Gramercy Tavern

          Colicchio & Sons
          85 10th Ave, New York, NY 10011
