Rock Creek Lakes Resort for Pie In the Sky - Just a warning on their hrs - Eastern Sierras - some pics

I tried to go to Rock Creek Resort for Pie In the Sky this past July 4th weekend. I read on CH how good they are and really wanted to try them, but timing was just bad for us. It's a tiny corner of a space for maybe 6 people to eat at the counter. Small shop, resort part in the back I guess.

Sat 7/2/11 - got there after 3pm, pie long gone at 1:30pm. Sun 7/3 - hiked all day - no time to get it.

Mon 7/4/11 - Store hrs 7am-7pm, but we were leaving the area, no pie available at 8am.

Time to get Pie: 10:30am-1pm (or until they run out!!) Slices are expensive at $5.95/slice; mudpie $6.95/slice. Sold by Slice only!

Hiking part was tough. Gem Lakes is hard to find this yr, we went Sun 7/3/11 and trail is 100% snow. I liked Chickenfoot Lake better, mostly frozen but 1 mile less work to get there.

Going up this thursday through monday. Been hiking up this way to the 11,000 foot level before. Loved it, beautiful! Didn't love the altitude sickness though, haha!

You are talking my back country and my pies, but snow in July and a frozen Chickenfoot Lake just does not compute. So sorry it worked out to be such a dud because my favorite August memory of Gem Lakes were the lush, lush, lush wildflowers. And both times we did this hike, somehow we timed it to get at least slices of the blackberry pie which never tasted better than eating it sitting on rocks in this glorious back country. There was a tiny sign to Gem Lakes at the cut off that went on to Morgan Pass and I wonder if that too was covered in snow. Thanks for trying at least - it would of/ could of/ should have been a winner ...except for this delayed winter.

Edit: Ooopps, just looked at your photos and they are worth a 1000 of my words. Unbelievable. But happy to see you made it all the way back - extraordinary that you did without any trails besides snow. It was the cascade of lakes and wetlands and flowers that truly made these Gem Lakes - just a string of glistening jewels of beauty back there.
