Having a dinner for a large group this Thursday.. I love Imperial Palace but, have not been to Canton Gourmet.. The oysters alone make me want to go to IP..

Which place would provide the best experience for a large group..

i think imperial palace is a better restaurant overall, i actually think its the best chinese restaurant in NY. canton gourmet is good (i actually just reviewed it: http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/791092), but if you're bringing a big group especially people that people that haven't been to flushing before then IP is the way to go

here's a really old post i did on IP

        Hi Lau,

I really enjoy reading your reviews and appreciate the knowledge you share... So, yeh, I invited 30 of my friends and family to meet me here tonight, it's my bday... Looks like there are about 18 of us coming. .I am nervous as I think 15 is the large table they have.. We shall see how that goes down.

Will report on how it goes.

id call them asap to make a reservation, that's a huge table, so you're going to need a couple of tables, so you want to make sure you guys area all sitting next to each other

Last night went off without a hitch.. Normally the place is packed, last night, it was not.. We ended up being about 20 people.. So they put us 10 and 10...

Howard was our (head) waiter.. Just my main contact.. He is young, attentive, friendly, knowledgeable..

I ordered for the table.. We started with snails in black bean sauce, salt baked duck tongue, and what i thought was seafood egg rolls but, was something much different and pretty bad.. The black bean sauce was really nice as were the salt baked duck tongues.. Table didn't react too badly to the duck tongues and after trying them, there were none left.. Personally one of my favorite dishes of the evening..

Out next came the huge and I mean bigger than I've ever seen before, oyster in XO Sauce.. Everyone at the table received an oyster. This was another favorite of the night.. Two people at the table claimed this to be the best thing they have ever eaten.. While normal oysters are to be slurped, this took 4 large bites to finish..

Over the next hour in a steady parade came the Peking Pork Chops, Garlic Crab over noodles, Pea Shoots, Sizzling Beef, Sizzling Sable, Cumin Lamb Chops and some fried rice..

The quality of the food was spot on.. It is funny because most of my friends who are in to food, which a lot are not, are so use to getting Spicy Chinese Food along the lines of Sichuan or Hunan, it seemed to be a bit of a change for them.. And I think some missed the spice a lot..

Staff was friendly, even reacted well when a 20 people simultaneously ordered ice water.. Haha, there was a slight tick that perhaps a poker player could pick up on but, he took it in stride.

All in all it was a great night, there was lots of table jumping, more than enough food, more than enough beer, total bill was 35 bucks a head.

i still haven't tried the oysters, i need to go back and try those soon

There were people at the table that didn't like shrimp, someone didn't like crab, so we did shrimp in the rice and crab in the noodles...

But yeh, the oysters are worth the trip .

I also think this place is one of the gems in NYC. Glad you had a great b'day there Daniel (did you hit 30 yet?). Those oysters are great, although Ginny wouldnt go near them when we went with erica and a group.

yeh, perhaps too subtle for me.. I like the subtle flavors that a rice picks up in those steamed chicken dishes, or when wrapped in lotus or other leaves but, the crab with rice was a little too subtle..

I love the garlic in the crab, i love spice in my crab or even a nice vinegar taste.. I guess I am not looking for subtlety in my crab.. I am a cancer after all..
