Dominion Smokehouse - Name changeover for the Cherry st diner

I was at the Cherry st diner (Commissioners and Cherry) having a burger and was chatting with one of the managers there.

Apparently they will be known as the "Dominion Smokehouse" in a week or two, and they will have an entire menu of cold smoked meats (they already smoke their own salmon, which is absolutely delicious, ribs and pork).

Judging from what they serve now, I have pretty high hopes for their new menu.

There was no definitive date for the name and menu changeover, but will happen for sure before July 23rd from what I gather.

Hopefully they'll keep their $6/pint beer selections (Smash Bomb Atomic IPA is served amongst other things)

  1. That's a refreshing twist. No need that I can tell for another southern-style BBQ joint.

I would hope that they also have a deli section, then, for take out. I really miss the Viking deli for that stuff. If this new place can offer anything like that, I'd be extremely happy.

No need for one to do it poorly. One that does BBQ well would be welcomed.

I take care of my BBQ needs at home.

    2. Sounds very cool, but: do they realize there's already a pub called the Dominion on Queen within moderate walking distance, and it's been there for over 100 years? Unless they're somehow related in ownership, this sounds like a confusion waiting to happen. I remember numerous mixups on Chowhound a few years back when a restaurant opened in Leslieville called "Soma" and ignored the fact that there was already a well-known chocolate seller in the nearby Distillery by that same name.

Is this the same place that had been empty for some years and lately a movie site?

        1. re: Herne

The Dominion on Queen is open and features live music almost daily. I don't think it is known for the food but more the live entertainment.

I believe you're referring to The Canary Restaurant, which closed a few years ago. It was further north on Cherry St, close to the Distillery District. Different place from the Cherry St. Restaurant.

I'll have to take a rip to Cherry street to get this straight. About 45 years ago I used to pass by a restaurant every morning but I think things have become confused or maybe there is a second restaurant that was established after I left the area.

You're definitely thinking of The Canary -- it was on the corner of Cherry and Front (north of the Gardiner) and had been around for decades. It has been closed for a few years now.

Cherry St. Restaurant is at the corner of Cherry and Commissioner's (south of the Gardiner), across from Turtle Island Recycling -- it was in fact opened by the owner of Turtle Island so his employees could have a decent place to eat nearby.

I was a huge supporter of the place when it opened last year (may have been late the year before). Then they took a big turn for the worse recently, replacing kind, solid staff with the young and hip, changing the classic diner menu to appeal to the nearby film industry. It will be interesting to see what this next change does for the place.

        2. Just to be clear, is this the place known as Cherry Street Restaurant

Or are you referring to some other place?

Yes, the Cherry St Restaurant (not diner as I posted originally) at Cherry and Commissioner's (kitty corner to the T&T)

          2. I was there the other night and I din't notice a new name. I did notice however their smokehouse menu section and ordered the ribs. In my opinion one of the more authentic BBQ ribs I've had. A little too well done but nice smoke ring and flavour. Not sure what rub they use but it was too subtle for me. Oh and the BEST BEANS i've had to date. I'll go back just for the beans - fantastic.

            1. I will call tomorrow but does anyone know they normal hours? Says 7am to "late" on their website. Is the name still indeed the same? I was originally thinking of going to Gilead cafe before a Totem show in portlands but if this place is indeed open in the evenings I will go before the show (wonder if it is known/gets busy at night with Cirque on?). Anyone been now that cirque is on?

EDIT: Ah, actually, I see they have a special menu section called "Cirque Menu"..
