July 4th Restaurant musings - new BYOB in Rumson; nightmare in west end
Busy weekend and everything seemed to be packed all weekend; here were our highs and lows:
Georgina in Rumson; those looking for Frank from Angelica's will find him here at this new BYOB in Rumson, location is the former Barn on Ave of Two Rives; went Friday night with party of 8; placed was jammed, a real scene with table hopping and everyone seeming to know each other, but warm and friendly as only Frank can make a place.... Lamb Chops were the hit of the night, service remarkably great for a holiday weekend; HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!!!
Cinco De Mayo in West End; thank the poster here who turned us on to this new mexican with an outdoor patio on Brighton; service was great, packed with nice weather on Saturday but everyone hustled; food was ok, menu extensive, plenty of good beers and magarita's; free app and desert was a welcome treat
Sunday night dinner at Doris & Ed's, way overcrowded and they did not handle the crowds well, barmen were good at keeping spirits up, service wicked slow; food remarkably good - black bass was tremendous!
Tre Amici, this place is the roller coaster place on the shore, sometimes an over the top great meal, but wow sometimes it is just dreadful; unfortunately the latter this weekend

if there is such thing as over friendly service you will find it at Cinco de Mayo...not necessarily a bad thing but we had to laugh when it seemed like every server in the restaurant came over to ask us if we wanted more salsa and chips or how we were enjoying our meal. Even the owner came over and thanked us for coming. We were also given complimentary quesedilla to start. A nice touch. Food was overall good but not great. The reasonable pricing, fun atmosphere and friendly service are enough for me to go back
Food was fantastic; my wife's lamb chops were grilled to perfection, some type of rub on them
I had a tuscan bean soup that was silky, rich an ddelicious and a dinner salad with grilled veggies and fresh parmesan
Basically tuscan Italian with daily specails.
Probably one of the best new BYOB editions to the shore in a few years
We went back for the third time last night - the ravioli special was wild mushroom and ricotta in a porcinin reduction sauce - simply amazing - also tried the spinach gnocchi in scallion cream sauce; pretty heavy dish but wow, really flavorful.... started with a stuffed artichoke that was bathed in a tangy vinnegrette with cheesy breadcrumbs, leafs were tender and the stalk cooked all the way through
The place was packed through 9:45 when we left, new diners coming in at 9 and 9:15 -
We called at 7:45 asking for a table for two asap - Kim the hostess said they would have something by 8:20 - she took our phone number and said she woudl call us back when the table was opening up,
we drove over and had a cocktail at the fromagerie across the street until she called at 8:18 - we walked over and the table was waiting for us...just great service from the moment they answered the phone until the minute we left.
THIS PLACE IS A WINNER, but only 40 seats so call early!
