Different Dining Experience

Are there any places in the area that do dinners on their farms where they grow/raise food?

City Provisions organizes farm dinners. It looks like they have one coming up on July 16:

Prairie Fruits has a dinner series but it sells out very quickly (already sold out for this year):

Will definitely be investigating those. The art gallery looks like a nice spot for lunch. I am going to skip the dinner cruise and just go for the cruise portion.

          Enjoy!

Incidentally, you don't have to pay for admission to enter the museum in order to dine at Terzo Piano.

Some of the wineries in northern Illinois have special events and wine dinners. You can find a list of area wineries with links at www.illinoiswine.org/region_north.html Coopers Hawk has a restaurant at their winery in Orland Park (and several other restaurants in the area).

I also noticed that Lynfred Winery shows a barbecue in the garden at Goebbert’s Pumpkin Farm in South Barrington coming up on July 22. That's the only farm-based meal I've heard of - not a surprise, since the Chicago area is so built up and there aren't many farms until you go outside the metro area.

Heritage Prairie Farms just west of Geneva does farm dinners every few months. They also recently added wood fired pizza nights at the Farm.

Dinners in art galleries or anything? Cruise?

Several restaurants have unusual settings and still have great food. North Pond is in the middle of Lincoln Park; the contemporary American cuisine is from Chef Bruce Sherman, who has been a finalist for a James Beard Award for each of the past five years. Terzo Piano is in the new Modern Wing of the Art Institute (our most well-known art museum) and the food is from Tony Mantuano of Spiaggia; it's open for lunch every day, dinner only on Thursdays. Everest, our best French restaurant, from Chef Jean Joho, is on the top (40th) floor of the Midwest Stock Exchange Building, with a view looking out over the city.

In the "not known for great food" category, dinner cruises leave from Navy Pier (see www.navypier.com/things2do/boats.html for a list), and the Signature Room is on the 95th floor of the John Hancock Center.
