American Ham in Paris
I would like to buy an American ham in Paris.
It seems this board is for questions about where in the States to buy pressure cookers, and endless questions about the same tourist restaurants. But not which ham to substitute for a recipe like this: http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/7930...
So I will ask a different question: where can I buy such an American ham? My family is once again in France and Italy, and I travel once per year to the US for work. If I must buy such a ham in the US, then so be it. Is there any where to buy one here?
that thread refers to a country ham -- which is dry-cured. No shortage of those -- nearly any jambon sec will do, although I'd go for a cheaper one that doesn't have the sublime flavors of parma/bellota/Black forest or similar..
For "regular" ham, look in the refrigerated case -- you can now usually find quarter hams from Alsace that I've had success glazing and baking it for Easter. (2 of them make a good dinner with leftovers for sammiches for a few days) I've found them at Carrefour, Auchan, and Leclerc.
Failing that, ask at the deli in the supermarche or at the charcutier -- a couple of years ago, I bought a 2-kg chunk of the end of the ham that they were selling in the charcuterie department (expensive, but made a killer Easter ham)
