anything near Jacob Riis beach??

  • 6

Please help me out, chowhounds. If I take the Belt Parkway past Coney Island to Jacob Riis Beach tomorrow afternoon, is there anywhere to stop for lunch en route? For some reason, I'm drawing a blank, but I don't want to eat the beach-concession burgers as a "default." TIA.

  1. Rockaway Taco is quite nearby! Too far to walk, but it sounds like you have a car. http://www.nytimes.com/2010/08/22/nyr...

    1. another option is exit the parkway at Sheepshead bay (Knapp St. exit) and go to Randazzo's or Roll n' Roaster both on Emmons Ave. These are our go-to places when heading home from Riis.

There's a bar on 129th street called Jameson's that has excellent burgers.

Thanks for the ideas! Randazzo's sounds especially good for a beach trip. I also remembered that L & B Spumoni Garden is easy to get to from the Belt Parkway, for future reference.

      2. I just got back from Rockaway beach (just a few dozen blocks past Riis), and ate at the new food stalls on Beach 96 Street and the ocean. To my complete surprise, the Thai stand (called something Elephants) had the BEST yum neua (beef salad) I have had in NYC in at least 6-7 years, if not more. The moo ping was also excellent, and I'm finishing their very good mango and sticky rice as I write. Friends had a fish sandwich from a place called... hmm... not Rockaway Tacos, but the stand next to it... and it, too was excellent--light fish, topped with a wonderful fresh salad-y concoction including some pickled vegetables, kind of like what you might get on a good falafel. Lots of picnic tables under a shaded tarp.

        1. We stop at Brennan and Carr's on the way home for roast beef sandwiches. Go up Flatbush, and take a left on Ave U through Marine Park and it will be on your left. Get it dipped. YUM!
