Tips for Dining, Eating, and Food Shopping in Manhattan

July 4th at 44 & 1/2 vs. 44 & X ??? What is the difference???? Pls Help

I am looking for a restaurant walking distance to the Intrepid.

Need to make dinner reservations for Monday nite, July 4th. For 2 couples looking for a nice, upscale restaurant .. would like a " fun nite out" kind of place to eat before we see the fireworks.

I came across 44 & 1/2 and it's sister restaurant 44 & X.

44 & X said that they are more upscale than their sister restaurant (44 & 1/2) but that their menus and price points are similar.

Which one would you recommend??

Has anyone been to either one?? or both??? If so, please explain the difference.

And of course--- if there are other restaurants that you suggest over these.. I'd love to hear them.

(Our parameters.. 1) walking distance to intrepid 2) looking for great ambience, good food 3) any cuisine is fine.. we eat all types.. though perhaps good fish or vegetarian options are helpful for the vegetarian w/ us 4) upscale, nice is preferred...

I tried to find a restaurant w/ either rooftop dining or water view along the Hudson, in that area... but couldn't really find anything.... We already have plans to view the fireworks, so I'm not looking for a party to join.... just a place to eat.....

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks!!!
Rk

  1. Have you tried calling Print Restaurant in the ink 48 hotel? I am not sure if they have any special events planned for the 4th, but it is much closer to the water than the 9th ave restaurants, with a food menu centered around locally sourced ingredients. Worth seeing if they'd be available for a seating.

    1. re: orthorunner

      Ortho.....

Both Print and 44 & X are available, but Print only has seating available at their communal table.

Sounds like you'd pick Print, right???

      Also - do you know the difference between 44 & 1/2 & 44 & x ??????

      thx!!!

    2. I've had great meals at both 44 1/2 and 44 & X.

For 44 1/2 I was there for a brunch. It felt a lot more casual like a lunch/brunch place in my opinion.

44 & X I found to be an excellent choice for dinner. Every dish I had was phenomenal (Tuna Tartare appetizer and Short Rib main). I've got some photos from my 44 & X meal too.

I don't think you could go wrong with either choice, I would highly recommend 44 & X since I was really happy with the dishes I had (and everyone else seemed to be equally happy with their choices).
