China King and San Diego Bay Restaurant
Had my mom in from Boston to visit for a few days and here are is a quick review of our dining.
China King- We had dim sum on a weekday morning and ordered the usual suspect. Taro cake, shrimp dumpling, chicken feet, tofu wrapped pork, tripe, rice noodle and shrimp. My wife and I usually go to Phoenix Palace on Dobson and Warner but I thought China King was a tad better this time around. Best part of our meal was when our periwinkle w/ blackbean sauce came out and the remark we got from the table next to us. I guess we rather eat snails at 11:15 AM then combination plate #1, #12, #5 etc ;-)
San Diego Bay- I've been wanting to try this place for a very long time but the location had my wife thinking twice especially dining at night. After a trip to IKEA my mom and I stopped in for lunch. This place is awesome! We had the Seafood Coctail Combo, San Diego Shrimp and the fried whole red snapper. The cocktail combo was a chilled spicy tomato/cucumber broth filled with fresh snails, octopus, oysters, shrimps and clams. The large bowl was packed with all the goodies for only $10! San Diego Shrimp was a crabmeat/oaxaca cheese stuffed shrimp wrapped with bacon. It was covered with a spicy tomatillo cream sauce served with rice and bean another solid dish. Lastly the fried whole red snapper was served with a vinegar base sauce with banana peppers. We asked for flour tortillas and made fish tacos out of the meal. The snapper was huge and fried perfectly! We spoke little spanish and the staff spoke even less english but they were so friendly in steering us with their favorite dishes. The menu was quite extensive and I cannot wait to come back. This place is truly a hidden gem!
