El Zarape Mexican Grill (Tampa)

New Mexican place on Armenia. They say they have been there two months. I guess I have been holed up because I just noticed them for the first time last night. Lunch today was very good. I had five tacos: tripa, lengua, barbacoa (goat), carnitas, and al pastor. I enjoyed all of the tacos quite a bit. The tripa was crunchy (but not too crunchy). The al pastor had a nice mix of well-seasoned meat and pineapple. The lengua, barbacoa and carnitas were all distinctive and delicious. My friend ordered enchiladas and didn't rave (but she is not typically one to praise). There were tortas and sopes on the menu as well. I will have to check those out soon. One thing I noticed is that the place is open until 11. I wish I had known that; it would have come in handy recently. This is another great new addition to my neighborhood.

Andy, have you had the huaraches at Acapulco? That is one of my favorite dishes in Tampa.

Todd, these comparisons are very hard for me. I had lunch at El Zarape and dinner at TdM and loved both meals. As for Acapulco, I am in desperate love with their huaraches. Nothing is likely to displace my feelings for Acapulco anytime soon. One funny thing about El Zarape is that they serve their tacos in both Mexican and American style. I guess they are trying to appeal to a wide-audience.

Oooooo, can't wait to take it for a spin!
There was an El Zarape in Brandon years ago that was really good, I wonder if there's a relation...
Those tortillas look tantalizing--- 'specially since I've been 'low carb man' for the past two weeks...
Great to have another place in the area...

The tortillas were good. In fact, I wasn't certain whether they were homemade or not. Turns out they are not. The tacos come in two tortillas which is kind of unnecessary (particularly when you are eating five at a time). I like that they serve the tacos with cebollitas but I would like to see them char the cebollitas a bit more.
