San Francisco Bay Area

Tips for Dining, Eating, and Food Shopping in the SF Bay Area (including Berkeley, Oakland, Napa, Sonoma, Marin, and San Jose)

need rec near A.C.T

Going to a matinee so looking for a place I can walk to (only want to park once) either for lunch before or early dinner after.
Anything exceptional nearby? It's been years since I've been to Postrio and the hole in the wall Burmese and China Moon (?) that are a few blocks away are long gone - but I've not been to the area for a long time.
Prefer anything but American :)

  1. as long as it's a late lunch or early dinner, katana-ya is great for ramen; it can get very crowded at peak hours though.

lahore karahi is also the best pakistani food in sf, if not the bay area.

sadly my friend is diabetic so stays away from noodles, etc. Lahore sounds good - any special recs there? Is their began bhartha good (smokey) is the vindaloo hot but flavorful?

the tandoori fish is what they're known for (haven't had it). i also wouldn't go there looking for particularly exotic dishes, the menu really doesn't look any different from your average indian/pakistani restaurant; but the execution is far better; the chef has a secret spice mix which is noticeable in nearly all their dishes.

Thanks - I saw the check please episode on their website after I read your post so got the fish rec from that. I can see from the menu that it isn't "exotic" but was homing in on your rec that it is exceptionally well executed.

I like ramen and have now given Katana-ya a few chances. Probably a difference of opinion, but I would rate it acceptable, not great. Maybe different tastes. I think one problem is that it's not really a ramen joint; their menu is all over the map.

Biggest complaint was that the noodles were too soggy. I mentioned that to a server and she agreed that she liked them more chewy as well; so if I go back, I will specify. But, I can't believe that anyone would prefer them so limp. Broth was alright, but not special. I don't recall the other individual ingredients at this time.

Atmosphere didn't suit me either. It's not Japanese owned, and didn't have a Japanese feel that I associate with good ramen (although, I have enjoyed good ramen at non-Japanese places). Yes, I know it's not a "native" Japanese dish.

Was seated at the sushi bar (for ramen) last time and observed some less than ideal sanitary practices.

      3. You may want to give yourself a little extra time at Lahore Karahi at lunch.

Thanks I saw this and figured if we planned to eat there I should call before we go (which is a few weeks) to see what is going on.
Would like other recs if there are some!

        2. Have you been to Borobudur? Long time since I have myself, but perhaps someone can offer an update. (It's near where the Burmese resto used to be.) Check the report on Chabaa Thai too, an abbreviated menu at the theatre district location. (click on the blue Place links to find earlier discussions)
