Affordable Sashimi Grade Tuna

Anyone know a good place that sells retail? I wanted to make some seared ahi without paying a fortune.

I tend to not look for bargains when I eat raw fish so I am usually okay paying Whole Foods or Bristol Farms prices, but I am always tempted to try Point Loma Seafood's sashimi grade. Does anyone have experience with Point Loma sashimi grade fish?

I've not bought fish at Pt Loma Seafood- I know little of their sources. But I've been consistently unimpressed with Whole Foods' fish.

I've never done sashimi with Whole Foods or Bristol Farms, but I have made some great poke and lomi lomi salmon.

Chutoro Tuna from a Japanese fish delivery truck guy who buys fish at LA wholesale market - the price of tuna is low and quality is so high. It's higher than most of Sushi restaurants. The fish he sells has skin (which is edible if you scale, boil, and marinate) so you have to trim off some parts though. Ask your Japanese friends to buy some tuna for you.

You can buy a good quality trimmed tuna at Japanese markets such as Nijiya and Mitsuwa for higher prices. These are where most 1st-generation Japanese people in town buy their fish. Nijiya has very good very inexpensive Salmon Sashimi.

I ended up going to Catalina Offshore. Great fish but a little pricey for wholesale. I bought a pound and a half of Yellow Tail for $35.

You have to choose carefully and buy what they have in good supply. Get on Tommy's Facebook (oh- huh- forgot you don't "do" that) and you'll see great deals on the highest quality and freshest fish in San Diego. When they get a whole boatload of something, they'll sell it for less money.

No. Go to www.catalinaop.com then sign up for the email updates (bottom left column).

When you get those weekly email sales, it instructs you to call in your order ahead and ask for Tommy. There will be a link to Tommy's Facebook page and you can 'friend' him there.

If you don't have Facebook, the weekly emails with sale information is all you need. Because you will call in your order and speak with him and can ask if there is anything else available.

                +1.

A few months ago yellowtail was as low as $4.50/lb. Not sashimi grade, but I wasn't looking for sashimi grade.

The fish I bought was so very fresh and so very good.

A pound and a half of yellow tail for $35?!

When he has it in quantity it's normally $4-6/lb.

I think with Catalina you need to buy what is fresh and available not go in with a preconception of what you want to buy.

BTW, they have fresh WSB fillets right now for about $8.50/lb. That's some good eats right there.

That stuff is frozen, farmed yellowtail to boot. You aren't going to find it that much cheaper for that product.

                  Ick...

He has yellowtail fillets on sale right now for $6.50/lb.

I just bought a a couple of baseball chunks of Ahi from Costco..
Seared up that bad boy rare and it was beyond delicious..
Very clean but the key was getting it that day of 'packaged date'....it was $13.99 a pound.

While never one to be politically correct, much of the Costco fish comes from sources that are less than sustainable. I've done the same thing- read no holier-than-thou in this post. But Tommy's the guy. If you don't know him, email me off line.

Over that past year, Costco has been addressing the sustainable issue.

Personally, when it comes to eating sashimi, I'm not going to risk my intestines on a bargain chunk of fish.

This place rocks. Tommy will take care of you. This is one of the few places I'll buy seafood in San Diego.
