Lady's 50th birthdays

LadyBlue1961 Jun 28, 2011 06:46 AM

Two of my friends and I have been friends for 35+ years, and live in a rural area. We are going to be visiting Philly in August. Any suggestions for a place to celebrate our 50th birthdays? We were all born in the same month (2 of us 1 day apart!). It doesn't have to be fancy, or expensive, just great food! Proximity to 30th street station a plus! Thanks!!

Can you help us narrow down some suggestions? Type of food? Atmosphere? BYOB vs Bar?

JG Domestic is right next door and I thought it was great. But, if you don't like small plates or sharing, it might not be a good fit.

Two other suggestions for the University City area:

Distrito - upscale Mexican also by Jose Garces (same chef as JG Domestic). Think relaxed atmosphere, good marguaritas and lots of little mexican street food dishes.

Marigold Kitchen - (Have others eaten here recently) - Probably the best BYO in the University City area, doing great creative food with fresh ingredients.About 15 blocks from 30th Street Station but doing some very creative food..

Others may have some better suggestions if you go East into the so called Center City area. Everything is an easy cab ride from 30th street.

Happy Birthday to all of you! I also like the idea of Distrito. It is a really lively atmosphere and the food is wonderful. It is small plates so you can order lots of things and share. You may have seen Chef Garces on Iron Chef.
