Restaurant that's good for seafood lovers and vegans alike?

cathyeats Jun 27, 2011 12:44 PM

Hi, I'm looking for a place to take some out of town guests and I'm coming up blank. We need fish/seafood options as well as vegan choices.

I would consider any price range except the very top tier, and anywhere in Manhattan is ok. Prefer a non-stuffy atmosphere.

Any ideas?

Cathy, Del Posto can put together a vegan menu and versions of it have looked very appetizing to me (a non vegan), in the past. I don't think I've had many seafood dishes at the restaurant, but in general, the kitchen seems to be competent all around. Perhaps someone can speak more specifically to seafood dishes they've tried.

Ilili also has a wide range of mezze that appear to be vegan. It's a very good restaurant and I've had wonderful fish preparations, there.

Del Posto might come across as stuffy, since the decor is very ornate and there are a lot of wait staff for each table. Ilili is still somewhat upscale, but the vibe is more casual and low key. The lounge area can be somewhat sceney. The dining rooms are pretty conducive to a good conversation, though.

When you say vegan do you mean vegan or "vegan." In almost every restaurant in this city that doesn't specifically cater to vegans or vegetarians it will be all but impossible to get a truly vegan dish that isn't insultingly basic.

Hmm, I hadn't thought about it in those terms. It seems to me that it's easy to get Italian food that's truly vegan. Pasta dishes with vegetables and/or beans, where they leave off the cheese. Or Greek, maybe?

the pasta will have egg in it, but "vegans" (like the kind i was for like 8 years) won't care.

Are you considering Chinese, Japanese, or Indian food, or do you prefer western cuisines?

Picholine will accomodate all vegan requests and has a few seafood dishes. though it's rather high end with two Michelin stars and priced accordingly.
