Preferred Type of Shrimp?

I purchase shrimp fairly often and have begun to develop a preference for those imported from different countries- primarily Indonesia. I have tried those from Thailand, Mexico, and the Gulf and as much as I want to love Gulf shrimp I just don't- in fact, they are my least favorite and have an odd taste to them (in my opinion). It might be important to note that everything I have tried is farm raised rather than wild caught. Does anyone else have specific preferences when it comes to purchasing shrimp? If so, what do you buy and where?

Local Atlantic shrimp directly off the boat (which docks just down the road) from my friend, the Shrimp Pimp.

Morecambe Bay brown shrimp. Widely available where I am but, when not, grey shrimp (which is really the same thing)

^^ my absolute favourite! widely available here (NL) as well. supermarket version is peeled, but market fishmongers also have them with shell intact (nice and crunchy). i love both and eat them every week.

@OP: i prefer salt water prawns with shell. they're all farmed in the far East.

I think your problem is farm raised rather than wild caught. We only buy Gulf wild caught shrimp. I would think that by definition Gulf shrimp could not be farm raised. Am I missing something?

No you are not, but they do sell farm raised Texas, or maybe labeld Gulf shrimp here on the Texas coast. I won't touch them, they look terrible. The Gulf shrimp have two varieties, brown and white, with the white being much milder, while the brown is too strong for some. My hard core shrimp friends prefer brown. Next time I'm at my local market I'll check out the farm raised labeling, I just won't buy them.

Off Topic but Great Name. Welcome to CH!
The best shrimp I find for myself I can say I buy by country, but rather what looks fresh and by far the best and freshest I find (and usually the best price) I find at the Asian Supermarkets Like Hong Kong or HMart.
