Babbo- Vegetarian Pasta Tasting Menu

Hi Hounds,
Since Mario Batali has become increasingly sympathetic to the vegetarian camp, I'm looking for an update on Babbo's vegetarian policy. I had one of the best meals of my life there, eating everything from lamb's tongue to sweetbreads and tripe but I hope to take my boyfriend there and he only eats kosher meat so is effectively vegetarian, as far as Babbo is concerned. He really wants to experience their pasta after hearing me rave. I found an old post about a vegetarian pasta tasting menu that they are willing to do if given advanced notice. Does anyone have any information on this and how to request it?

If that does not exist is there a place where I could find more information on the seemingly vegetarian pasta dishes they currently offer? I don't see recipes for them posted on the site. I'm specifically thinking of the goat cheese tortelloni with fennel pollen, the maccheroni alla chitarra (the mullet roe is not a problem), the garganelli with funghi or the sweet potato lune.

Any help is much appreciated!

  1. I did the vegetarian pasta tasting at Babbo a few months ago. When I made the reservation, I simply confirmed with the person taking the reservation that they could do this. I don't remember if my husband and I both had to have the vegetarian version of the pasta tasting, but that sounds familiar. I also confirmed they could accommodate when we had to call to confirm the reservation a couple of days before, and when we got to the restaurant. Definitely ask when you call. I was not super impressed with the food. At least two dishes were extremely oversalted, and we just didn't love some of the others. It may have been an off night more than a reflection of the pasta tasting generally. Good luck!

    1. When I went, we did not inquire ahead of time. When reviewing the menu, we asked about a non-meat pasta tasting (though I said seafood was okay). The waiter went through the changes to the tasting menu, though I didn't find most of the substitutes very exciting, and the entire table had to all order the vegetarian menu if one person did. We decided instead to order a la carte, and the carnivore was very appreciative.
