Birthday cake recommendations

Looking for bakery recommendations for a child's birthday cake. I am not looking for cakes from Safeway nor do I need Ace of Cake priced cakes. Looking for something that is tasty and artful at a reasonable cost. Location in the Bethesda/ Rockville vicinity is a plus.

Just Cakes in Bethesda? I haven't ordered a birthday cake from there but I've tasted some of their things and they have been pretty good.

I know this might sound crazy but I recently went to a birthday party and had an AMAZING cake from Costco. Seriously...very, very good.

I also have ordered cakes from Marvelous Market before.

          People forget about Costco's bakery?
What people and how can I join them?

Their bakery is top notch - we hosted a reception at synagogue prior to our wedding and everything was from costco and people were raving about their basic chocolate cake - lots of layers and very rich. And I think it was like $14.99.

I had their chocolate cake recently for a work function. Not as good as one I made from scratch a few weeks ago, but better than Whole Foods. I'd say it's the best purchased cake I've had - especially for that price.

Costco. Or the Woodmoor Pastry shop in Silver Spring, not too far away. I just had a cake from there a few weeks ago---I'd forgotten how good they were. And reasonable.

Thanks for the Costco suggestions. While I love Costco cakes, they are very limited on designs... looking for a cake that can be customized. Something with fondant decor would be a nice find. Definitely going to look into the other recommendations.

While not Bethesda, Fluffy Thoughts in McClean is where we got our wedding cake and it was amazing - that said, while we had our tasting, LOTS of kids birthday cakes were leaving and one that stood out was a cake with fondant comic book characters standing on top of it - it was very cool and the kid that came with them to pick it up LOVED it.
We went with them for our wedding because of the taste (yummmm) and price. The art for our cake was perfect (fondant isn't my thing, but the buttercream rocked).

I got a birthday cake a while ago from Breads Unlimited in Bethesda (next to Strosneiders). They're a lot cheaper than Just Cakes (which is overpriced and they use too-dense pound cake batter). My cake was for an adult so the "art" was deliberately limited but I asked for lots of flowers over the cake and they did a beautiful job. They do wedding cakes though so you should be able to find what you're looking for there. Everything I've ever bought there has been very fresh.

If you do not mind driving a little bit (you would take Spout Run Parkway) then I recommend http://www.pastriesbyrandolph.com/

I used to be the executive chef at the Motion Picture Association in DC and these cakes are fabulous. I served them to two Presidents of the US, member of Congress, and Hollywood types.

You should skip Duff's place...over priced and over rated
