Graduation dinner was not up to the usual standards, slightly off

  • 3

We usually love Pasta Cucina New City. But last night it left a lot to be desired. Either they've changed ownership, or changed the chef, or both, because it showed. Our son graduated yesterday, and he only had 2 hours before leaving on a senior trip, so we went to nearby Pasta Cucina. We were only 3 so had no reservation, and were shown into the bar room. Okay, it seems that several larger families were also arriving for graduation dinners, and so perhaps there was nothing available in the main dining room. That's fine, and all the tables in the bar room were also filled. There were 2 waitresses in that room, and unfortunately we had the "bad one". We asked for salad dressing on the side, it came on the salad. She never came back (several times during the meal she seemed to disappear for extremely long times). The maitre d finally came, brought us a plain salad, but no utensils? The red sauce that was on the chicken parm and penne was way too peppery! We like spicy food, but this had too much black pepper on it for anyone's liking. The poor service continued...our appetizer was never brought, and when the meal was delivered, my husband reminded her and so she brought it out then, ice cold. Who would want their appetizer with the main course? My husband told her to take it back and not put it on the bill. The side of sauteed broccoli with garlic was half the usual size, and did not have roasted garlic slices, it had spoons of jarred chopped garlic with oil added. No one asked if we wanted dessert, although we sat for 20 minutes before the bill came? I'm not sure if we should try it again, or cross it off of our list. This was one of our usual places, and I feel so sad. Maybe it was just an off night. Has anyone else been lately? Did you find it up to par, or has it slipped? Maybe they just couldn't handle all the graduation parties, but there wasn't a line to get in, and we have seen it busier? I can understand the poor service attributed to just this one waitress, but the food, well it just wasn't quite right?

  1. I guess others felt the same way because Pasta Cucina New City is now closed. I hate to have been right, predicting that the food and the service just wasn't up to their usual standards when we went on June 25th. Like I said in my original post, this is so sad to me. Pasta Cucina New City was one of our usual places, and I'm sure going to miss it. I do see online that Stony Point is still open, but it says it's independently owned and not related to any other Pasta Cucinas. Also, I believe that Suffern is also still open? Has anyone been to either Pasta Cucina in Stony Point or in Suffern lately? If so, are they good, and how do they compare to the old Pasta Cucina of New City? Thank you.

We went to the Suffern Pasta Cucina last Friday and it was great. It was just like the New City one was before they moved buildings. I always got the tortellini with shrimp in a pink sauce and once the location in New City moved from the little strip mall into the larger building next door, I noticed that the quality of the dish went downhill. I had it in the Suffern location last week and it was excellent. The portions in Suffern seem to be a lot larger than I ever had in New City because we brought home half of our dishes and had them the next day.

Thank you Legendarystarbolt. I'll have to try the Suffern Pasta Cucina again. We haven't been there for many years. I used to like the tortellini with shrimp in pink sauce in the old Pasta Cucina before they moved too, so I'm glad to hear that the one in Suffern was similar to that. Now, to convince my husband to get on the Thruway and go up to Suffern, well, wish me luck! He likes to stay close to home (New City).
