NYC soapstone supplier

Where do i get soapstone near NYC? is it OK to have my local stone cutter get a slab for me or do i need to get it from a more direct source?

Do you know what kind of soapstone you want? There are different colors, patterns and hardness. When I bought mine I went to different stone yards and got samples of some of the slabs. You can abuse it a little and find out how it holds up. After I found some slabs I liked, I found a retailer. Some will only work through third party retailers. I actually got the best price going through the now defunct Design Expo. I liked the green mountain brand of soapstone. Their website lists fabricators. I would do a search with BBB and on the internet to find out how they are rated. I went to the stone yard on the day it was templated and made sure it was laid out with the pattern how I wanted it. Checkout the kitchen forum on gardenweb.com for more discussion on soapstone.
