Any sour cherries sighted yet?

Has anyone seen any sour cherries in the Greenmarkets yet this year? Can't wait to get my mitts on some, and I fear the crop will be lousy because of the weather we had when the fruit should have been setting. Thanks very much.

  1. Battleview Orchards near our house in NJ has opened their pick-your-own fields. While I'm not intending to pick cherries (I prefer to pick strawberries, which I did several times), I just came back from their indoor market, and there were boxes filled with cherries from their fields for sale. They looked fabulous. Of course, how they taste is a whole other matter. I didn't buy any. All this is by way of saying that I'm guessing they're at the Greemarkets now.

Huh - had an eye out for them today at Union Square, but must have missed them. Hope to be in luck next weekend.

The resident sour cherry fiend will be haunting the greenmarkets all week, will report on findings. Thanks, all.

Locust Grove told me he would have them this week--they are at the market Wednesdays and Saturdays. Thursdays they are near Lincoln Center.

BTW: He also told me that the sweet cherries are about finished, as the harvest was not good this year.

Great, thanks. Word passed on to the addict.

I expect you should find sour cherries available around now and for the next couple weeks.

The local orchard up here in Columbia County had their first harvest at the Farmer's market up here on June 25, and expects the harvest to last 3-4 weeks. He has the darker cherries first (yum! -- made one fine pie!), then the lighter. Good luck, and don't miss out!

Hooray! No danger of that when my husband is after them. ;-)
              Thanks.

        2. call M. Wells and ask where they are getting them - they had a sour cherry pie today (very good).

          1. Garden of Eden on 23rd and 7th Ave has sour cherries in their fruit section. Would bet Fairway on 75th and Broadway has them too.

No, Fairway doesn't have them yet. At least they didn't yesterday. I remember last year that Fairway got them in about two weeks after they were first spotted in the farmers' markets--and when they had them, they were about one-third the price. I recall being horrified at what was being charged for them last year at the Lincoln Center market. Don't know if that was Locust Grove or not. But for the quantity I wanted to buy, I waited for Fairway to get them in.

Thanks, JoanN, I didn't know they carried them. Another place to haunt.

              2. I saw sour cherries this a.m. at the greenmarket on W. 97th Street. Locust Grove is carrying them. I think they were $7 per quart. The man said they would have them for a few more weeks probably.
