Buster Rhino - downtown T.O.!!!

LOCKED DISCUSSION

Just read this today:
http://www.postcity.com/Eat-Shop-Do/E...

Very exciting news. Like a lot of car-less downtowners I've been reading all about how every BBQ joint in the GTA pales to Buster. But haven't been able to get over to Oshawa to try it myself. Well, it seems the wait should not be too much longer.

  1. "by the end of the year" But I want it now!!!! :D

    1. Not sure if they still do, but Sweet Escapes in the distillery used to make sandwiches with Buster's pulled pork, and also sell some of their sauces. If they don't, then they probably are focussing on their really good desserts, which are also worth trying.

I was there a few months ago and they were definitely still using Buster Rhino's products.

      2. BBQ is really starting to take off in the GTA, If Buster Rhino's opens a Toronto location I would think it would be a success, My question would be will it bring in smoked foods from the Whitby location like they do in Oshawa or will it be smoked on premises? I would hope the latter.

        1. I'm so very excited for this! I love Buster Rhinos but have a hard time making it out to his current locations. I usually get friends to bring back the frozen products for me which are AMAZING to have on hand. fingers crossed that the Toronto location happens.

          1. Go Darryl Go! Time to take some poseurs to school!! Authenticity rules and fusion drools, and Darryl doesn't do fusion!!!

Just too bad Camp 31 won't do the same and open in town. Paris is even farther than Whitby...

            1. praying it'll be right by kensington/caplansky's.

cloak and dagger + cask ale + buster rhino's..........game over.

I hope you're wrong and they open somewhere else, maybe down by Queens Quay. I like Caplanskys, but I don't consider it bbq. Toronto needs more non-chain places to get a better than average meal. I'd rather have some good places scattered around the city rather than The One place that puts everyone else out of business.

Are you saying Cloak and Dagger and Buster Rhino's are chains?

                  1. re: TexSquared

No, I'm saying there's lots of chains in Toronto and Toronto needs more independents and more variety. I don't want just the one place for bbq or any other kind of food in the whole city.

                2. re: aser

That would be delish. Last time we were at Cloak we were talking about food options in the area. The bartender said we were more than welcome to bring back take out and eat it there with our beers. Pulled pork and a Beau's sounds damn good too.

Buster in downtown is awesome news!

                  1. re: abigllama

Is this place Cloak and Dagger any good?

                    1. re: callitasicit

It's a pub in the neighbourhood where Buster's is looking to set up a location. People seem to either love it or hate it, but they have decent beers on tap. I'm not sure if they still serve food but we were just discussing beer options in the area to accompany the BBQ.

                  2. re: aser

                    I'm sold. That's a damn fine combo.

                    1. This is great news, firstly because the current downtown BBQ options are poor (Yes I dont like the Cue at Stockyards, Phils) and also because I am very happy for Daryl, the guy really does his best to give you his best every time and the quality shines through in every meal I have had there.

All the best and hoping this either forces the others to step up their game or step aside.

                      1. Here I was hoping BR would distribute to hot dog vendors. I guess a store is even better!

Though the fact that I ran out of BR sauce 3 months ago is probably a good indication that I don't visit my parents often enough...

I hope it's near Caplansky's as it'll be a decent walk for us and we will definitely be regulars. (LLBO?) Leslieville means taking the streetcar. :-( (We don't go to Leslieville often.)

btw, I've seen BR sauce at the Kitchen Table in the Forest Hill Village (Spadina/St. Clair) if you are ever in a pickle.....

I'm hoping for Queens Quay. Leslieville has plenty of good places to eat.

                                    1. re: GoodGravy

Queens Quay would be good but honestly anywhere other than an industrial strip mall in Whitby is an improvement.

                                      1. re: GoodGravy

Not really. We have a few but it is still up and coming.

                                        1. re: JennaBean

We have Wally Magoos. We need something super good to bring balance to the neighborhood.

                                          1. re: GoodGravy

Right. I'm sorry you need it more than we do! ;-)

                                  2. This just made my day! I have friends in Boston who have told me on occasion about some food fests that come to town and a couple of good bbq joints in and around Boston. I have yet to find a place like that here and am beyond happy that Buster will hopefully come to Toronto! Like you num nums I am car-less so if this becomes a reality I'm sure a lot of us will be VERY happy!

                                    1. What hasn't been answered yet is, will Darryl actually smoke the food onsite, or smoke it in Whitby to be reheated on the grill downtown? I'm assuming it'll all be prepared onsite but would want to hear it from him.

Not that I would have to go downtown as I'm 15 minutes away from his Whitby shop.

                                      1. re: TexSquared

The Whitby location is industrial; likewise Stockyards is smoked in an industrial zone. If you BBQ or smoke in a restaurant setting there will be many more hoops to hurdle.

                                        1. re: jayt90

This may explain the delay in deciding and announcing a location.

                                          1. re: jayt90

Put it in that old malting plant on Bathurst by the water. It's huge and abandoned and the smoke wouldn't even make it out the building.

                                            1. re: jayt90

Then explain to me Barque Smokehouse on Roncesvalles?

                                              1. re: RogerDoger

We have had smoke for years in the Roncesvalles/High Park area due to butchers smoking their own sausages and the Christie cookie plant.

Depending on the wind direction I usually wake to the sweet smell of baking cookies....

                                                1. re: ingloriouseater

Thats what I meant, jayt90 made it seem like it is an issue.. but many places have done it for years...

                                              2. re: jayt90

Isn't Stockyards' smoker parked in the alley out back? So is Phil's.

                                                1. re: iMarilyn

                                                  1) Stockyards smoker has been in the building for a while (they built a casing around it).

                                                  2) There is a certain expectation by all city officials about smells, smells are alright as long as they aren't noxious and are only part of the everyday running of the business. I can tell you from experience that smelling pulled pork all night every night becomes noxious after a while. The city will ask you to stop smoking overnights at the neighborhoods request.

                                                  That's all from me.

                                                  1. re: BusterRhino

I recommend that old Loblaws warehouse on Lakeshore & Bathurst next to the Amsterdam Brewery. BBQ and brew. It's synergy made in heaven.

                                                    1. re: GoodGravy

Isn't it already being turned into a Loblaws?

                                            2. Folks, we understand that everyone is excited at the prospect of Buster Rhino's opening downtown. However, finding a location for Darryl is really off topic for the board. So since the opening is so far off and all discussion is speculation at this point, we're going to lock this thread. When there is more concrete opening information, everyone is welcome to start a new thread on the topic.
