BTW how is Island Prime doing near SAN? I'm gonna use it as the pivot point for a mileage run on Delta during 4th of July weekend.

  1. I'm assuming you're hoping to eat somewhere near the airport and thus Island Prime? That said, I have not been there in over a year, but I found it to be "so so" when you factor in the price. The view is, of course, delightful, and quality service, but the food was uninspired. I remember having something like "ceviche trio" and it was absolutely bland. Then I always hate having to pay extra for sides (I mean, the chef certainly ought to pair things strategically IMO), and we got something someone else raved about (maybe creamed corn), but I found it just "eh."

Here are three places I'd recommend, ordered from closest to furthest from airport (all 3 are within a few miles/<$20 cab ride):
    1. The Pearl http://www.thepearlsd.com/dine/ Restaurant in a cool mid-century mod hotel. You can dine poolside. I've always just done apps (and have also hosted work parties there), and never disappointed.
    2. Bice http://bicesandiego.com/ In the gaslamp (a place I mostly avoid). Italian cheese bar- need I say more? I like their starters, wasn't "wowed" by our entree the one time we did a full meal.
    3. Bo Beau http://www.cohnrestaurants.com/menu-r... Same restaurant group as Island Prime, but it's my current "go to" (ok, so admittedly it is only a 10 minute walk from home, but still, I would travel to go there). Two menu items stand above the rest: brussels sprouts with pancetta, parmesan, and balsamic, and red curry mussels. Other things we've tried have been good, but those are the two stars of the show.
