Middendorf's Question
Do they have two locations? I'm getting conflicting info on the web. Do they still have a place in Ponchatoula? I've never been and am passing that way next month. I originally was going to stop in Mandeville at Louis and The Red Headed Lady but have found really bad reviews on them since their DDD episode. I've always wanted to try Middendorf's but just not sure about the location(s).
Thanks for your help!

Agreed with everyone else. Its SO worth the drive (and its really not that bad from town) We always get some boiled crabs for everyone to pick at but hands down, if I had one last meal, it would probably be their catfish. Check out all the kitties in back too. We got a kick out of that since I was girl.

IMHO, Middendorf's has the bestest Shrimp Remoulade. Yes, I do know I said bestest. And yes I have been there lately. I started going there before there was an I-55. We used to have to drive the old two lane (can't remember the highway number) out of LaPlace. My mouth is watering thinking about it. The fried seafood platter is great also.

One location, two buildings located next to each other. From my last two visits it seems like they are only using the building on the right, closest to the water, and the outdoor deck dining area. As for menu, stick to the catfish, it's what they do best.

Ok, maybe the 30 minutes each way off the highway isn't worth the trip. I like fried fish but I don't think enough to make that much of a side trip. We're heading from Houston to Biloxi in about 3 weeks. Maybe we'll just leave later and stop at Frey's in Jennings. Can you tell I plan my trips around good restaurants :-) Love Frey's and haven't been in about 3 years.
The week after stopping in Biloxi, we'll be back in NO for 5 days, can't wait. I'm dying to try Mahoney's. Chicken liver poboy - it's calling my name !!!!

It's worth it. Don't miss their marinated crab claws, BBq'd oysters, frog legs, turtle soup and as mentioned famous "thin" fried catfish, frog legs, . It's a great old place - one of the last original manchac restaurants with a great porch. Don't miss it. And send me some frog legs.

Yes, I think I'm back on for Middendorf's. On the menu, they have the bbq oysters and they also have Italian oysters broiled and topped with garlic parmesan. I figured the Italian oysters would be like Drago's. I adore Drago's oysters. I will have some the week after that when we are in NO for the whole week. I might have them twice.

While you're down there, if you want another special old place near the sunshine bridge in Convent b/w New Orleans and Baton Rouge I can HIGHLY recommend Hymel's on the old river road. Best oysters in Louisiana. yes, I said best.

re: Louisiana Mouth
That name sure sounds familiar but I know I've never been there. I rarely go that route, last time was evacuating for Katrina but I was on the other side of the river by then. Maybe it's talked up on this site a lot and that's why it rings a bell. I'll make a note to get that way.

DRAT, you are ruining my day :-( I usually come in the winter and didn't even stop to think about that. Casamento's will be closed I bet. Drago's?? I know they will be open but what would be the point of going without the chargrilled oysters? We are stopping at Middendorf's on the way east but circling around and spending 5 days in NO the following week.

re: texasredtop
Actually, getting off I-12 to 55 to Manchac and Middendorf's takes about 15 minutes,it's an easy drive. Getting off I-12 to weave your way through Mandeville traffic and Louie's might take longer and is not an easy drive. I love both places. They are very different but I would have to try the thin catfish.
