Hamburg - Great Grilled Chicken Wings at Café Ponton!!

A couple of dishes stood out in our dinner at Café Ponton, located strategically on Poststraße along the canal near the intersection with Große Bleichen – both starters, the grilled slightly spicy chicken wings were impossibly delicious, whilst the goat’s cheese & arugula-topped ultra-thin crisp-bread was absolutely addictive & delightful. I’d go back to the café again just for these 2 dishes alone.
Other starters did not leave much of an impression – I was told by a dining companion to avoid the tomato soup (tepid & bland), whilst the large shrimps salad seemed to have come with a bunch of stunted shrimps instead.
Mains were competently prepared – a standout was the ricotta-spinach-filled raviolis, served with tomato-saffron-based sauce – served with a generous shaving of Parmigiano-Reggiano, the whole dish was comforting & pretty substantial. The house special pizza with chicken was also satisfying. The kasekuche (plain German cheesecake) was the sort I was looking for - easy to find in little southern German towns like Heidelberg or Stuttgart, but seemingly evasive up north here in Hamburg.
Beautiful setting – a good place for sustenance in-between shopping. Also helped that the delightful & largish Große Bleichen branch of the Thalia bookstore chain was practically 3 steps away.
