I really like the chaat at a place in the 50s (?) just west of 5th; sorry I don't remember the name but search here and in the Village Voice's Fork in the Road blog for chaat - Name begins withSs.

This place IS a restaurant, but the chaat is Indian street food, and it's easy to do take out!

The halal cart at 6th and 53rd does a booming business. There's always a line there that's at least 20 long.
