Trip Report 6/3-6/9

Here's the rundown of our dining experiences on this trip: (2 people)

Friday: Arrived in the Quarter around 9:00 pm. We put our bags in the room (OMNI Royal Orleans) and headed to Deanie's. We ate 4 lbs of crawfish and a seafood platter topped with SScrabs. The crawfish were delicious and the seafood platter was ok, I think the oil that they were frying in was about done for the day, meaning it was tasting a bit "burnt."

Saturday: Breakfast was at Stanley and we took a bottle of bubbly with us. No corkage, very appreciated. We always order the eggs Stella (eggs benedict topped with sscrab), and it was delicious as always.

We attended the oyster festival for our lunch and ordered the Drago's chargrilled oysters - very good, and the Galatoire's oyster brochette-very good (but the bacon was not done, which would have made it way better). It was so hot we had to get inside at this point. We would return on Sunday when the weather was a bit cooler). Great jazzy music playing, hated to leave this.

Dinner: Irene's Cuisine, we love to go here and had the mozzarella and heirloom tomato salad and the sscrab appetizer (browned butter meuniere style - best sscrab of the trip). We had the pasta w/crawfish sauce and topped w/sscrab (I LOVE sscrabs incase you haven't noticed, and can't get them like this in Sacramento). Also had the drum - cooked perfectly. Heath was our wonderful server for this meal.

Sunday: Started the morning with a egg/cheese breakfast muffin from Johnny's, then headed to Commander's Palace for a 12:30 brunch. We ordered the Absinthe oyster dome, trio of soups, the pecan crusted fish (drum), everything was perfect here, as always. Lally visited our table, she's so sweet, and when she asked if we were having a good time we of course told her we were 'eatin, drinkin and carrying on!'

After walking a bit throughout the Quarter, and shopping for some local music from Peaches Records on Decatur, we ducked back into the oyster festival (weather was way cooler, and overcast) and had the fried oyster poboy from Stanley/Stella? (heavenly), the GW Fins grilled oysters, and some of Acme's raw oysters (everything was wonderful.)

Dinner was at NOLA. We sat at the chef's counter. We ordered Ms. Hay's chicken wings, and the mussels. We always have these wings and they never disappoint. The mussels were small for PEIs (Prince Edward Island). Also ordered the lobster salad. It was delicious and refreshing, but of course, not a lot of lobster in it. The redfish with the garlic crust was prepared perfectly, and the pork loin was huge and tender - yum. We ordered the Fess Parker "Big Easy" Syrah by the glass (a new find from our recent trip to Santa Ynez, CA) and it was scrumptious, and especially so because we were drinking it while in the Big Easy. The dinner rolls/muffins are so yummy here, it is hard to not eat more of them-but we know we don't want to be too full for our meal.

Monday: Lunch was at Mr. B's and we ate BBQ shrimp (every drop) and had two orders of the fried oyster trio w/tartar (oysters were huge and plump-so heavenly). Also had a bowl of the seafood gumbo. Everything was delicious and we love talking with the locals that always seem to be hanging out at the bar.

Dinner was at Bon Ton Cafe. (On our walk to the restaurant we passed August restaurant and saw Chef Besh talking to a group at the front table by the window-fyi.) Ordered the two sscrab dinner covered with the "special" sauce - YUM, and the drum, had a cup of their chicken/andouille gumbo (very good) and the fried crawfish tails (not sure, but I think the husband liked these alot). Atmosphere is so wonderful at BTC, so fun to people watch too.

Tuesday: Lunch was at Emeril's. We started with the BBQ shrimp, and also ordered the chicken and waffles and the fish special of the day (drum), which was cooked perfectly but on the bottom the fish was a bit burnt-funny, didn't affect the taste. We shared a bottle of Alpha Omega Napa Chardonnay that we lugged from Sacramento (paid $25 corkage-ouch), but enjoyed being able to just sit and sip at leisure.

Dinner was at Deanie's again, a repeat of Friday night's meal. We just love those crawfish! (again, we can't really get those in Sacramento, so we eat all we can while in NOLA).

Wednesday: Breakfast at Stanley again (repeat of Saturday's wonderful breakfast).

Late lunch was at Deanie's for more crawfish and this time tried their BBQ Shrimp (a different style from Mr. B's, more spices and the liquid is clearer, not something that we wanted to completely sop up, but still good).

Dinner: Back to Irene's for that SScrab appetizer and everything was delicious, again. We are trying to land there on a night when the have their oyster rockefeller soup, but we missed again. Sonny was our wonderful server tonight.

Thursday (last day of our trip): Breakfast muffin from Johnny's and then off to Mr. B's for our last taste of their BBQ shrimp and those scrumptious fried oysters (and to say goodbye to Ian-the wonderful bartender there). We met Don at the bar, a local gentleman, and enjoyed conversing with him very much. Off to the airport now and will be dreaming of our next visit! Bye, NOLA!

  1. You know people are always asking where to get crawfish in the quarter and I never think of Deanie's.

        that's not too bad..I was paying about $13/14 (that was in B.R.) towards the end of the season.

        Like Charlie I forget about the FQ Deanie's. But its a good deal for visitors who don;t get out of the Quarter..

        Glad to hear Bon Ton was running smoothly...need to get over there sometime soon.

          It's around $4/lb eat in at Deanie's in Bucktown, so there's your FQ markup.

            Doesn't seem _too_ unreasonable for the FQ, unlike some of those food items you see in hotel gift shops.

              Is crawfish still available in mid August?

                We were in NOLA the last week of June. After having delicious crawfish at Harbor Seafood in Kenner for $3.99/lb, my daughter wanted more. We called the FQ Deanies and were told they had none. We found some at a place called Daisy Dukes. Not nearly as good as at Harbor Seafood and about twice as expensive, but my daughter was satisfied and my son got to eat pancakes for dinner so all was well.

              We did have Cafe du Monde on Monday morning, but to go.

                Went to Mr B's two times on this last trip to NOLA and had the BBQ shrimp each time sitting at the bar, I was thinking of you Kukubura.
