Ruidoso, NM

Headed to Ruidoso for a cooling off vacation. What are the good places to eat? Been there once before and enjoyed Cafe Rio, Elena's Place, Village Buttery, Cattle Baron and Rebecca's at Cloudcroft. What have I missed?

  1. My wife and I visit Rui ~ 6 times a year and eat out most of the time. We like, in no particular order,
Texas Club (for steaks which are really good, but the salad and vets are very ordinary).
Casa Blanca - Tex-Mex-NewMex. Skip the straight texmex and get the signature green chile chicken enchiladas.
The Buttery, lunch only. A sandwich/quiche/salad place tha a man can love. Great pie.
Rickshaw: Hurry the place is too good and too offbeat to survive. Indian/Thai/other Asian. We like.
Pena's - owner chef Mexican and breakfast. Bkfst & linch only. Fresh/ mostly locals
Cattle Baron- quite OK. Huge salad bar, good for groups, lunch menu.
Landlocked- owned by the same people as Casablanca Blanca and Rickshaw and, considering the lack of ocean, amazingly good seafood. It's the only place for good seafood around.
Farley's - we like it. Bar, noise, pool tables, open roomy atmosphere perfect for families or couples, patio (also buttery, pena's, Casa, Rickshaw) and great chile cheeseburgers. Really great wood-fired oven pizza (though if you're going just for pizza go toooooo
Cafe Rio. Absolutely the best pizza in the state.

    Enjoy!

Thanks, JW! We will try some of these that we missed on the last go-round.

    2. Landlocked is the best food in town. Cattle Baron is blah, if you want a steak just go to Texas Club. Rickshaw is good. Hall of Flame in midtown has great burgers and tacos.

I forgot about the Hall of Flame! We had a GREAT burger there last year. We're here now, so looking forward to trying some of these new suggestions. BTW, it's not much cooler than where I came from. :(

Yeah the monsoon season hasn't started yet so its still quite hot but when it comes it'll be very nice.

      2. Also 'here'. We had very nice meal at rickshaw last night. Casa blanca for lunch today and Texas Club tonight. Allgood.

We're hitting Rickshaw tomorrow. The menu looks great! Hall of Flame for lunch and cooking tonight. How do you feel about the buffet up at the Inn of the Mountain Gods? (1/2 price on Tuesdays and Thursdays!) I'm not big on buffets, but people in my circle are clamoring for piles of shrimp. It's certainly beautiful there as I recall, although the dryness this year is saddening.

          1. re: Lambowner

We have been there only once and ~4 years ago, but our impression was that the quantity and variety of food was great, but the quality was just so-so.

        2. We've had a good meal at Rickshaw (pad thai, curry chicken sandwiches, pot sickers, edamame guacamole) and an abysmal meal at Chef Lupe's New Mexican restaurant. Lupe's is apparently known for its breakfast, and I should have realized it is their only strong suit since everyone was ordering whip cream topped pancakes at 1:00 p.m. on a weekday. Our queso was not edible, literally, so we did not. The chile relleno was tough as leather (unpeeled) and flavorless. The "frozen margarita" tasted like frozen water. The pizza at Cafe Rio was good last night, although I would like mine left in the oven longer. A website we found is full of wrong information about Cafe Rio, describing a beer and wine list, Greek food, etc. They haven't had beer or wine in 5 years and the owner/manager let us know his frustrations on stating that fact "hundreds of times a day." Wish they did. The "Greek food" is a Greek salad and some tzatziki which was more like cucumber salad than any tzatziki I have had. Disappointed to find Dreamcatcher has summer hours of Thursday through Sunday! We had heard lots about their Cubano sandwich. We've also seen lots of good reports on River's Edge which is rated number one restaurant in Ruidoso on one site (trip advisor), although it appears to be yet another sandwich place, of which there is a plethora in town. Breakfast at Lincoln County Grill was green chili good! We'll be hitting Village Buttery today and the Inn's buffet Thursday. We bought a bunch of wine at Relleno Bros. Winery in town. Did that last year and really enjoyed their reds. In between eatin' we're having a great time! Lots of things are closed in Ruidoso and surrounding cities on Mondays, we discovered. The rain and cool weather are awesome and the reason we come here in the summer.

Glad you made it to Lincoln County Grill for breakfast, it has one of the best breakfast menus in town. You might also try Cornerstone Bakery for a great breakfast.

          2. Enjoyed the much recommended Cubano sandwich at Dreamcatcher. Here's a bad picture taken at twilight on the patio. It's pulled pork, ham, cheese, mustard, pickles on a pressed ciabatta roll. Yummy. Great vacation in Ruidoso. Recommend it for summer get-aways. The town is hurting from lack of rain and winter ski snowfall over the past year, but we found the people gracious and the food and drink delicious. Thanks for the recommendations all.
