From October 2010
Directly opposite the apartment we were renting on Rue Verneuil is this stylish, small local’s bistro. They do simple food well and we had a delicious lunch here. A glass of Auge Blanc de Blancs was fresh, crammed full of green apples and citrus and gets the gastric juices well and truly flowing. We also ordered a Marcel Lapierre MMIII, a vin de table from the cult Beaujolais producer. Warm berry fruits on the nose with dried herbs and cherry confiture. Nice plush texture in the mouth with Gamay’s red fruit sweetness tempered by some earthy savoury notes and some underlying scorched earth.
Heidi’s oeuf en cocotte was masterfully simple with the most wonderful egg strutting its stuff with a little cream and fresh herbs. My cep mushrooms with parsley again a study in understatement but thoroughly satisfying and a cracking match with the Lapierre. Heidi wanted something light for main, I suggested we share the Cote de Boeuf, she gave me a look as if to say ‘you idiot’ and then agreed. Glad she did as again the produce was of the highest quality, prepared perfectly and served with wickedly good roast potatoes and a little green salad, perfectly dressed.
Splendid crème brulee for me for dessert and Ile de Flotante for Heidi, a kind of floating pavlova on a bed of vanilla cream. Service here is prompt and friendly and we would certainly return again.
